The firm should have not stated the gender of the successful candidate. it is actually no business of those that failed who the successful person was let alone their gender They could have just used the term someone who suited our needs very well and left it at that. Having said that, this persons reaction to the decision is an overreaction and she should understand that they have the right to hire who they please just not to give so much detail. What is the point of hiring a person be they male or female who would not be able to do heavy lifting?? The firm made a rationale choice but used somewhat unwise communication methods.

My brief experience of property managers is that they are useless blood sucking leeches. Despite your giving them explicit instructions for who to place in your house they find just anyone and put them in there and do little work to earn their letting fee. I truly despised them for their utter uselessness. The burden has been transferred more to owners now who will merely transfer it back to tenants. The government has failed to correct these leeches.

This is an example of the double standard we have operating in NZ.....if a woman is denied entry to a male only zone ...there is hell to pay but when you get this situation occurring it is like there is not a big enough fuss. I believe it is called misandry Clear signage is needed and if cubicles are for mothers to breast feed then locks should be provided if they are so concerned. This guy was just being a good dad and attending to his daughter.

Obama had more appeal internationally than domestically although many in the US must fervently wish he or Hillary was back in office. Jacindas star is waning a bit here as reality hits. Our low dollar is hitting as well ....prices are so high everywhere for food, petrol, postage everything. Our dollar is low partly because of a drop in business confidence. It is depressing really.

The tax is absolutely disgusting and will force prices up everywhere not just Auckland. It is a repulsive ugly thing that will stick it to motorists for 10 years and beyond. Consumers will wear it in terms of increased cost of food and what the hell for ? To support a transport system that only one city will mostly be using. Other councils being the boltheads they are will follow suit and I bet they will try to increase rates too as well. NZ the land of the total tax rip off.....by government and local bodies.

To counteract the need to wear warmer clothing the school should use more aggressive heating and insulate buildings better ....what is the bet their heating is utterly useless coz its TOO expensive to heat the school! They should be more lenient as long as students do not abuse the privilege. This seems to be the biggest problem when you give an inch, a mile is taken ...

I am alarmed at thisThis is highly personal information and I think it is appalling. Financial information like this is sacrosanct. I dont have any interest in giving this to the government. The fact you have to detail all your expenditure to them also is also very intrusive and also provide receipts! Ridiculous! Sometimes you just dont have these ...because they are online. I am thankful I was not selected. Hope it never happens!

As one form of racism dies off, another is born such as what is described in the article. We havent progressed any further until everyone no matter what they look like is considered equally and treated with respect without any special privileges. i can see that happening properly in NZ today. I see the seesaw tipping the other way only and not achieving a balance.

The $2 shops add a rich dimension of retail culture and do provide a more economic alternative however places like the The Warehouse are strongly competing in some areas or compete by bringing in totally different product. It makes for a far more interesting retail environment. We get really ripped off here for groceries and power so something cheap and cheerful does sometimes make our day as long as it is not absolute rubbish.

While NZ may not like possums breeding everywhere and deforesting our native forests, it seems a bit sick to make them suffer through a punch. Quick and easy euthanizing is best. Even as I write this I feel we walk a bit of a thin line with this argument. I recall programmes on NZ TV about the most effective traps to break a possums neck quickly! Meanwhile over in Oz, they are protected and petted and doted over.

Have no friends from school myself . I had people I sort of knocked around with but they are not the sort of people you would want to connect with years later. When i did I found them strange, probably due to jealousy on their part. I had some friends at university but now i would never really make the effort to talk to them as they have all moved on and we are now poles apart. I really couldnt care less. Who needs them? Tell your daughter to make her own fun. Friends can be baggage or a bad influence so really who needs then? . I think it is important that you show her a strong family life to make up for the lack of friends. Having no peer pressure or pressure to be or act a certain way due to the dweebs you may find yourself hanging around with is a great liberation. Sure it seems lonely but she will soon leave school and leave all those deadhead losers behind. Encourage her in her studies so she can go to places with more intelligent people around who will appreciate her company.

Agreed. We get ripped off for the most basic of commodities ...child poverty??? look at why it is happening as a result of greedy food suppliers....butter costs so much, milk is moderately expensive, cheese is crazily priced ....it is shameful

I have stockpiled single use plastic bags but not generally for shopping but as bin liners where their second use for this purpose is very useful!! It is so hard to have to remember the darned tote bags and we all look like babushkas when we tote them around as well !!

This describes the lot of most teachers wherever they are teaching. It is damned hard work and you have to work extra time and after hours.I feel the secondary school teachers have it worst off because you are dealing with the poorly brought up teenager offspring of even worse parents .....and you cannot exercise any discipline.....it must be horrible. I hope they get a pay rise and a greater amount of protection from violent and poorly behaved students, .....maybe this government will get some extra money for not having to deal with plastic bags flying around the environment!

+21−7

You also experience this in places like Bali. Its horrible. All you want to do is just relax on the beach and you have these damnable panhandlers on the beach harassing you. Hope they get rid of them. Shopping malls and other designated places are the best places for these people.

Door to door salespeople .......in absolutely no way would I deal with this kind of unsolicited selling any more .....We dont live in safe enough times anymore .....Thankfully I live remotely and do not get these parasites coming to my door. If I were in the city I would employ a camera to vet them. Same goes with unsolicited phonecalls these days....... most of them are dodgey as they are normally after some kind of contribution or paymentIf you want something, go out and seek it yourself ....don;t wait for someone to come then you know that you have entered into something willingly

Everything is in a sorry state in some remote or populate areas of this country. It is hard to maintain public toilet facilities when anti social louts, layabouts and other pieces of garbage are vandalising these facilities constantly. I would gather the councils that maintain them can no longer bother to spend the money on them.

I think loneliness has a bigger effect on those who had a more socially active life when fit and able than those who were more solitary during most of their life. That said, the physical contact is needed otherwise you can get fairly phobic (depending on the individual of course) in certain situations when you have been out of circulation too long. For elderly whole days can go by without any physical contact and just the TV for company. If you have a mother or father it is important to keep up the contact as what you take for granted they will value more highly due to their isolation. Despite all these good words said on trying to combat isolation and loneliness humans are still not much different from the pack animals they were. We trust and mix with the people we know best and whom we have known for some time like family, friends from schooltimes etc. Sometimes it can be hard for certain individuals to mix and it only takes one instance of a cold shoulder or a nasty remark (when trying to make contact) from some nasty person to put a lonely person off. Elderly are also worried about being burdens and also hold back for that reason. I do not take so called digital friendships seriously unless there have been opportunities to meet the person at least several times in person.

Gawd I hardly watch NZ TV anymore ....with Netflix and other online offerings so this move is somewhat inconsequential. I guess I might see a clip of him now and then on Stuff or One News.It is probably of more consequence to his media mates.I understand he is a highly respected journalist.

This sounds like the most sensible thing this type of government could have done since bringing in Kiwisaver. the present system is a stupid mess!!! When you call IRD and IF you get anyone on the phone you are made to feel as if you should not have called them in the first place. It is completely ambiguous. This system allows people to come clean and declare income

Lets not split hairs or melons here ...we do not want their disease ridden produce here and they would turn around the do the same with our produce so who cares? . Just mention apples and there goes another sore point!!

+9−2

We are disgustingly ripped off for everything in this country ....this adds insult to injury and will cause price increases in food and other items across the board! . Are they also thinking of taxing us even more if they get in for a second term???

+7−1

Agree with comments here. If you have to get a mortgage pay it off as soon as possible to avoid paying them any more interest than you have to ....I would agree the messages these bank employees give to consumers say on using credit cards and clearing debt is completely geared to making them the most profit. i recall one advising me that it was not the best approach to clear my credit card debt completely every two weeks!! ...what a load of BS!!! After I heard that comment I no longer held any bank employee in any level of esteem whatsoever

It sounds fascinating. However you would need to be in the right set up. We are materially and financially poor in NZ so such a lifestyle would be a nice change. However bringing back lots of money back to NZ and setting yourself up here better should be a long term goal. I wonder what Work stress is like there?

There is nothing wrong with believing in a divine being but organised religion is just an exclusive social club that pretends to be an agent of that divine being. Many of us can live very well without it.

I think it is important to realize that it is not just women who have to act this way to be safe. It is needed by anyone who is perceived to be vulnerable ...women, children, people with disabilities and the elderly whom I should add are sometimes preyed upon by young women with a criminal intent. Men also feel this way if alone and if there are groups of loud intoxicated or drug-addled people around consisting of mostly men but also mixed groups. It does not matter. Men are mostly the villains but so increasingly are women. I think the article needs to concentrate on the anti-social criminal element that is infiltrating all areas of society to the extent that anyone vulnerable is not safe, anything not locked down is going to be there as someone will swipe it ...etc etc. NZ is in no way a safe country anymore and most especially at night. However, some people are still lost in a 1950s bubble and think everything is hunky dory and that someone will run to your assistance. It is not always the case and you need to be so aware as Verity states. The episode described above was utterly horrible ...and it happened in a 200 m distance. It has been framed as a woman only problem but it isnt. It can affect anyone. Whats the solution? More police roaming around in squad cars could be nice ....you can never find one when you need one!

Agree about loans but credit cards are really convenient as long as you pay it off 100% every month. I earn some loyalty points and spend those loyalty points as a kind of funny money ...you can only use it in restricted places so spend it on ordinary grocery items in the places that accept it and save the real money to spend on other things. You also need insurance especially in this day and age ...this is a big outlay and the biggest have on the planet but it is something we need to some extent to avoid becoming destitute due to one unlucky episode...

This is a reincarnation of the Helen Clark nanny state ....irritating as hell ...I find multiple uses for plastic bags. They are an important part of our convenience and safety. Stupid people dictating to us what we should be doing. I dispose of my bags responsibly usually after using them several times. If the bag becomes damaged I dispose of it in the bin.

+10−6

You must be genetically predisposed to despising cucumbers .....the imagery you portray is horrific ....I dont think high society in the past would have visualised that while having their highly civilised cucumber sandwiches at some high tea!

I would agree with you on the Nepotism part although it is disguised in policies and procedures. You see it especially in universities where someones spouse, partner, daughter son or mother are employed at the same institution as they are. I think it feels a little mountain village like and I must confess I do not like it when I see it. It seems very unfair.

She has apologised and gracefully. There was nothing flippant about that apology. That is all she can do. You cannot take back the past and repeat the event. There have been more well known singers than her botching up songs in America in these public events. The pressure to perform in these live events is intense. America seems to be a bit of a crapola place to do anything at the moment and we all know why!!

+6−3

If this was an aged person, no matter what, people change as they age and actually get less cautious about such things. They might have felt lonely and needed the company. You would be surprised what people will do for some opportunity to talk to someone else. Sadly this is exploited by sales people.

Although I have no idea whether I will keep my job until 65 I feel more and more that I will be working beyond it if I am not booted out before that. I have KiwiSaver but even the amount saved by then will do little to bridge the gap. We all want choices and more comfortable living. I see people at work currently who are over 70 and still working. From a mental health perspective, it is probably better for you as well unless you are in a high-stress job.

Exactly .....I think they must find these clueless people under a rock or something. OMG the children are so cold!!! ...Well get the little dears to put on warm clothing and use flannelette sheets ....they are dead cheap if you go to the Warehouse. The only bad thing is of course there will be a build up of moisture and to combat this you could open windows on warm days but it is a hard ask in a sucky horrible climate like NZ.Probably the only way is to grin and bear it to save on the power and then to do a massive Spring Clean of the windows and other areas that accumulate mildew. It is constant hard work and people opt for the lazy expensive way of keeping the rooms constantly warm all the time ;....well that costs a lot in our rip off economy with sky high power prices where the basics of life are left to go to such crazily high levels due to a stupid government ....

+8−5

What a silly article .....had there been little packaging the items would have been severely damaged by the rough transit services that bring this stuff to us ......then she would have been complaining about the damage ...people are never satisfied with anything. Why dont you go and lug it home yourself from China or wherever it came from without packaging?

220.00 power bill and it involves withdrawing into small room for easier heating and just a fan heater. Have a piped air con but the electricity prices are just too crazily expensive to use it for heating the whole house...it is also a waste of energy and time and it actually does not do as good a job as a fan heater!! I also use dishwasher, hot water and dryer together with the usual kitchen appliances. Can probably make savings by heating in microwave ...who the heck has the time to cook but also use the oven from time to time. You can make some savings on heating but yes some parts of the house will remain icily cold to save on power.

The only good thing I have seen since she came to office is the realistic falling of the real estate market and a clamp on foreign buying. i cannot think of anything else good...our currency has slid since she came in ...could be external factors but she has not helped. Business confidence has fallen. That is quite significant. For all of Trumps heinous attributes, noone can deny there has been a stimulus to the American economy since he has come (albeit done by crazy means) and given money = God over there, it is not surprising that some will be silent about his mania while they enjoy the financial windfalls however shortlived......

If you think TM is bad, eBay is worse for sellers. Ebay is an absolutely horrible platform to work with when things go wrong and there is little friendly intelligent help except for the trained seals who will simply repeat what you already know. eBay great for buyers not so good for sellers. TM is preferable

+1−0

Yes they need to budget and make sacrifices. It is a pity that NZ Post is such a stupid rip off these days as one way to get extra cash is to sell unwanted items in the household on TM . Unfortunately the cost of mailing these renders the whole exercise uneconomic for the buyer ...and I am gathering that is why TM is dying a fast death these days ...! They have to literally give away prize money to make people list on their site ...

If you had knocked him out, you would have been the one ending up in court. It is tempting though but these people are trying to get a commission and have no morals about how they do it. A simple firm refusal gets rid of them. Never hesitate or feel you have to be niceYour mother is very wise.

So 1. Thats what I do when someone comes out with an unfamiliar word. Besides which we have been immersed in Maori words and sayings so long that this word should come naturally to most people, including the pronunciation!

+2−3

You are completely right.....there is a severe double standard operating. When there are male issues there is no voice speaking up for them. Feminist groups treat transgendered females among them differently which belies the hypocrisy of the movement. It seems the movement to get rid of discrimination in one group is blatantly creating strong discrimination in another group and people seem to think this is right like some sort of comeuppance. We live in a crazy world.....

Bring on medieval problems with bacteria!!! People are so incredibly ignorant. We need more than ever cleanliness and control of our foods. We need plastics and sensible reductions but not complete removal. As people have kept saying ...Greenies have no science education!

I dont give a damn about Amazon as they do levy hiridably high shipping rates so are just creaming customers and also the owner Bezos? is not the most charitable of individuals. However i do care about eBay and wonder how on earth that will work. I like buying goods through them and not necessarily new ones. I am starting to despise this stupid government ...any changes they make will sadly be permanent and no one else will change them. Hope they go out in the next election. What else are they going to tax?

+16−18

Golly the world is going to end just because some dodgey Aussie melons are off the shelf?? . They can keep their low quality produce which obviously is not subjected to strict biosecurity at their borders and we can wait for our own produce which I would prefer. If we are having to import their stuff then then that would explain the rip off prices of these in the shops lately

+3−6

Despite the pitiful response from St Johns, this lady had things well set up. She knew her neighbours and they rushed to her aid but the ambulance should have been there faster. At that time of the night it would seem the witching hour is the one reason for their delay. If I were her it might be best to buy a dwelling in a retirement village but I wouldnt be too trustworthy of the immediacy of the response there either. Theres an impression that these institutions who are meant to help you are remiss in their response when an elderly person is involved. It is pretty disgusting.

+3−8

I would recommend viewing the movie Latter Days which deals with Mormons and how they deal with same-sex attraction. Although it is probably over dramatized there is a session where a young guy is driven to suicide because of the horrendous curing therapy he is put through by his church which involve electric shocks, lying in bathtubs of ice and other stuff. He eventually abandons his unsympathetic parents and goes to a different family who are more accepting of him. While agreeing that a ban on this kind of tyranny should be considered, if someone willingly wants to submit themselves to this madness then they should be allowed to if they have received adequate advice for and against the practice. I guess you need to maintain freedom of choice. Certainly, if this kind of thing is done for money then it should be abandoned or banned immediately.
