Really ?Punching a small creature because it is a pest is unacceptable in the most primitive, uncivilized society on earth. Is this us in NZ actually thinking vicious cruelty to any animal is a subject for debate ?There is no debate here ... there is only wrong, wrong, wrong.

While NZ may not like possums breeding everywhere and deforesting our native forests, it seems a bit sick to make them suffer through a punch. Quick and easy euthanizing is best. Even as I write this I feel we walk a bit of a thin line with this argument. I recall programmes on NZ TV about the most effective traps to break a possums neck quickly! Meanwhile over in Oz, they are protected and petted and doted over.

Find them and prosecute them. Disgusting. Possums don't know they're pests. How big and tough you must feel punching something so small

I agree , there is no excuse for cruelty I mite add I have been a keen hunter all my life & some of the cruellest deaths I have witnessed on my own property is after a 1080 drop , im not going to go on in detail what happens to animals that eat it but I am truly stunned that members of our society that often stick up animal rights are also advocates for this horrid poison . I say it again no animals deserve to suffer like that.

If the SPCA really did care about possum cruelty then do something about 1080.

That's because they are an introduced species here and as they have no natural predators and an abundance of food they have thrived and taken over. They still deserve to be treated humanely.

Ever seen a possum or deer die from 1080 poisoning? Now thats cruel.

Not as cruel as the slow death they suffer with 1080.But lets not talk about that aye.

so why are we still using 1080 it is cruel as hell to everything that comes in contact with it

You should see what 1080 does to animals when it kills them... then you'll know what inhumane I really is.

I understand they need to be monitored, but this guy punching one, prosecute him and then hopefully someone does the same to him, just sick, how can a human being want to do that, and his mates laugh, what a bunch of absolute losers.

Yes they are a pest in the wild, but a pet? Hardly likely it would do any damage, the person who did this is quite likely to do the same to a human, animal cruelty leads to more serious offending because they have little morals about anything.

I have looked after little Joeys and they are gentle and sweet ... I know NZders hate them ( I don't ) and class them as pests but when I went to OZ for my brothers 50 th birthday the place where the party was held had possums and some were sitting on the steps and would hold out their paws to you as you went up them ... they were lovely, friendly and in no way were they classed as hated pests... to punch them, just shows the mentality of New Zealanders with animals, pests or not...

Every animal deserves to be treated with respect, it's alive just like you. We have definitely bred a culture here in NZ where it's ok to be mean to possums. Quite sad really
