Julian has been resident off and on in NZ for the past 15 years. He is usually here during Summers. He actually has done alot for NZ, as a patron of the arts. He has done quite a bit for the Auckland Art Gallery and quite a few other NZ institutions. He sponsored a few scholarships too for NZ students. He employs NZers at all his lodges.

See you in 3-4 years. Well be in the same position again. Everyone gets pay rises and costs increases across the board. So everyone ends up in exactly the same position with a few extra zeros in their paycheck. Cost of living needs to go down to raise the standard of living and then the pay rises will actually mean something.

Yes, completely correct. Lets NOT start exporting PC BS. Ironically theyll forget to celebrate the two cultures that started the Americas Cup, England and the USA because it doesnt fit with their PC BS agenda..

Hon PHIL TWYFORD: KiwiBuild homes are not subsidised. With KiwiBuild, we are choosing to build houses in the lower quartile; were choosing to build the affordable homes that the private market is currently not building. There is no subsidy.Hansard Record 18 May 2018

As opposed to the optimistic businesses which would do what exactly? Take on massive loans because theyre optimistic and then go out of business because theyve misjudged the market due to your pearl of business wisdom...? The only businesses that should be optimistic are debt collectors and fast food joints, but thats probably lost on you

This is the mayor that basically said âLet them eat cake❠regarding the petrol tax, by telling us to shop around while he was gleefully driving around in a taxpayer funded electric car. So how much of that regional fuel tax is funding these payrises?

How about we expand the tax base by getting more people into work instead of penalising the ones already working and saving for their futures? Better than dragging everyone down into poverty. Reform the RMA and make it easier and cheaper to build housing so it actually costs less to live in the first place, instead of striking for endless payrises that will get eaten up in 2 years....

Its absolutely important that the Americas Cup be a celebration of what it has always been, the spending of large amounts of money to make very expensive sailboats go very fast. It is not a grandstanding event to export NZs feeble attempts at social justice...

I just love it how Kiwis are so arrogant (yet at every turn tell you that their humble), that they think its completely acceptable to take a much lower pay than the global going rate for aeronautical engineers just for the privilege of paying through the nose for living in NZ... Standard response, if you dont like it leave. And what does that solve?Average pay may of $115000 may sound a lot, but globally, its not for aviation engineers. As living costs go up in NZ, everyone needs a pay rise to keep up with their place in the pecking order. Or else youll eventually get terms and conditions eroded to the point that a baggage handler will earn more than a engineer. Its happened at other airlines before. Example, the new collective agreement in hospitals has some cleaners on higher pay than some junior nurses...Yes, next it will probably be IT, police, firefighters, pilots and ferries to go on strike. You all voted for a government that encourages and promotes striking and pay rise. A better idea would have been to vote for a government that wants to lower the cost of living. You made the bed. Lie in it...

Nothing wrong with standards but where is the accountability from tenants too? You can have all that, (granted a functioning toilet, drains and safe wiring are basic standards) houses that face the sun, cleans the mold off themselves without you having to do anything but Im the one that has to fund it and take the risk. So I expect a decent return on my investment. So Im gonna charge a much higher rent. Complain all you want but a first time home buyer on a average income isnt going to be touched by a lender to fund such a fantastic property without significant security, which if they had, they probably wouldnt be renting in the first place. The rent would probably be about the same as a mortgage, but whos the bank going to lend to, someone with an existing asset to secure the mortgage against or a first time homebuyer with no existing asset with a average cashflow...?

Mine did too. I work, pay taxes, raised here, did some service in the fire service and search and rescue and I still feel like a outsider. Ahhh but what are you going to do about it? Probably what our Chinese ancestors did and just got on with it. Being successful is far better than dealing with racist zealots and a much better way of giving them the middle finger...

Actually Singapore is a different animal. Yes 23ish% tax. BUT Government mandates EVERYONE MUST save into CPF (kiwisaver on steroids) 40% of their wages/salary. That money is then used to invest into the country but the citizens reap the rewards. Government housing scheme also keeps apartments cheap for citizens because they can build in Singapore with red tape fees. And they build apartments, not 1/4 acre blocks. Government doesn't need a high tax rate because the shear volume of activity in business and CPF takes care of most of the Government spend. Oh and Singaporeans despise the concept of Social Welfare because it erodes the value of hard work as their Government puts it.

We dont dictate interest rates. The bulk of NZ banks fund mortgages off the international market. There just arent enough deposits to self fund mortgages in NZ. The international market dictate interest rates, and they dont give two hoots about the NZ economy. All they care about is risk vs reward. More risk =higher interest rates. If rates go up in the US, investors will move money back there so we would have to raise our rates to attract more investors. Expect interest rates to eventually rise. Its a circle of life thing...

What is Australia crowing about? All they have to do is refuse an issue of a SCV to any of the economic refugees from Nauru should they land in Australia. Its already in their laws as they deport thousands of NZ anyway by revoking SCVs on character grounds. That way, the economic refugees will not be second class citizens in NZ, only second class is Australia.. like the rest of us.

You cant even compare with Singapore. If your a local, your eligible for HDB and CPF in Singapore making living costs reasonable because you can afford your own property through HDB.Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineers in Oz are on about $135 K PLUS super....

The 1970s called. They want your renationalised, ThinkBig! Electrical grid idea back. Better idea.Virtual power stations using Tesla Powerwalls and rooftop solar controlled together to supply peaking requirements. Removes need for Genesis gas firing up the thermal peaking plants. Solar will cover some baseload requirements that our current hydro provides. If it gets to a critical mass.Weâre talking rooftop solar on most residential, public and commercial properties which are suitable. Power company provides the equipment, pays you for rental of your roof space. They control the flow of the power produced as required back into the grid.Tie windfarm generation into pumped hydro to store renewable energy production for off peak baseload generation. Taking load off normal hydro during night. Saving the lake levels for longer baseload generation.Cant be done? Well already being planned for in South Australia and technology proven with the Hornsdale Power Reserve.Time to ThinkDifferently! (sorrry IBM) instead of ThinkBig!

nah, it affects my Working for families payments if I earn too much... because I want the government to pay to raise my kids because apparently theyre the next generation of tax payers and we need lots of them to pay tax. But we want immigration stopped at the same time.....

Automation is a tool. Nothing more. If the general public knew how many times pilots have had to take over from automation when it did something inappropriate for the situation or did not behave as expected, youd never get on a fully automated aircraft either...

Pegasus launch costs, $40 million USD. RocketLab launch cost, $5.5 million USD.Pegasus uses old school solid fuel boosters. Once its lit, its going. You cant test fire or be 100% sure its going to perform on the day. Electron is liquid fuelled and controllable. Test firing isnt a issue. Rutherford engines arent cast. They are 3D printed. Faster production rate= lower cost. If Im building a cubesat network, conceivably I could have multiple launches in different orbital planes with multiple satellites with RocketLab for the price of 1 launch with Pegasus. Compared to SpaceX, as a cubesat customer, Im not even a afterthought. I want my cubesats in their most beneficial orbit, not somebody elses. I dont want to wait for somebody elses ride on their timetable. I need to build my cubesats to my funding schedule, not someone elses. I d head to RocketLab again hands down.Peter Beck is right, space is open for business once they iron out a kink. There are many companies involved with commercial space already. Planetary Resources, Spire, Sky and Space Global to name a few. And they arent pie in the sky companies, but real companies making real money now with cubesats. Some are even listed on the ASX. The world has changed. NZ is a technological backwater in this field because its population cant dream beyond rugby, farming and houses except for a few brave pioneers who usually get mocked.

Different tenancy laws in Europe. You can redecorate a rental in Europe, you wont get kicked out with 90 days notice. Tenants respect the property is a given. Over here, itll be a P lab before you can say Tenancy Tribunal, or burnt down with no recourse because they left the oil on the stove....

Not quite correct. We use a formula based on the fuel cost at each port and the cost to carry that fuel around, because it costs fuel to carry fuel. Where the graph crosses the savings made over the cost to carry, then we fill up in cheaper ports, unless some digger driver hits a pipeline. Its called tankering. The fuel prices usually have to be quite considerably cheap to start tankering. It would make sense for a trucking company to start tankering into Auckland as usually the cost to carry for them is negligible and they are going past anyway. Infact I would be considering putting a dedicated tanker on as that could result in a 10% saving in fuel cost alone after the costs of the dedicated tanker..

Its quite clear that is exactly the mentality, drag everyone down at the top. Evidence, the repeating calls to tax the rich more even though a lot of them have worked very hard to get where they are. That its rewarding mediocrity in itself. Work hard, get taxed more, why bother, lets be mediocre, its more rewarding. His comment is bare truth.

Unfortantely National bought in this Legislation for this in their last year of Government. Not that Labour went out of it's way to fight it. ACT was the only one which said something. But yes, this law is lunacy but has been coming for awhile.

Work hard to get the capital to invest in the first place = worked hard and penalised for investing in the future. Its going to be easier to spend spend spend and then just hold your hand out for a handout from the Labour government. Labour, spreading the poverty equally...

That statement is so categorically wrong its funny. Defence got 252.7 million in the last budget. Maori development got 328.7 million, more than defence. You want astronomical. Social Welfare spending got 22.9 billion. Explain how you possibly think that defence is the largest expenditure?!!

1. Because we are sovereign nation, not a hippy commune. We have one of the worlds largest EEZs. Go look it up. 2.The P8 has a large ordinance bay where the rear cargo hold was. It can carry torpedoes and depth charges dealing with said submarine. 3. Why would attacking a sub be a suicide mission? Subs rely on stealth. They dont have ground to air capability to shoot down aircraft. The whole idea of a sub is not to be seen and no one knowing your there in the first place. They often work alone unless guarding a larger battle group. Our armed forces already do all the objectives of fisheries, surveillance and search and rescue. The P8 can also drop Lindholme units for search and rescue. They cant do it effectively though in a 50 year old aircraft that regularly breaks down and smells of sweat and farts. If Im out in the southern ocean waiting to be found, I dont want to hear that the Orion that is being sent for me has broken down again...

I don't disagree that those on the minimum wage work hard. They do. And many people that are well off, started on the minimum wage, and worked their way up. I started below minimum wage but worked my way out. The real problem is not a wage problem. It is a cost of living problem. Rising wages will just result in more price hikes and we'll be where we started again. The cost of living problem is tied to the stupidly high cost of housing, which is tied to restricted supply because building in NZ is too expensive. ($100000 in fees, levies, consent and design before turning the first bit of dirt over?! Really?!) You can build a house brand new, house and land for under $500 k in Queensland, ask Duncan Garner. That shows that something is seriously wrong with NZ. Fix the cost of living so its cheaper for the people worse off, so they can pull themselves up. Don't drag others which have been successful down. The Green Party, which last time I looked are part of the government and have been calling for a additional tax bracket and higher tax rate on the higher brackets. Look at their website.

That only related to traders. They would sell in May and go away for summer holidays. The idea being that they didnt want to be caught on the wrong side of the trade while they were away from their offices and terminals while on summer holidays.
