We use oil now, we will use oil in 20 years time. We buy oil from oversea companies that drill for oil in a way that may not be environmentally sound - regardless, we still buy it, they still drill for it. they send it here on large tankers.Am I missing something or is this decision just ideological claptrap.
All Labour and Green ministers travel by pushbike of course, yea right
One day the time MAY come that oil and coal are no longer needed BUT it wont be any time soon,so why does this government and others think its fine to just throw a whole lot of New Zealanders out of work and not able to support their families, this needs to be done slowly and at the same time they need to have ACTUAL replacements for these industries not just pipe dreams. We cant all work an office in a city somewhere, some of us are real workers doing the grunt work that keeps our economy going, all of you who believe oil,gas and coal are on the way out anytime soon are just naive and not in the real world,if you think its expensive to live now you aint seen nothing yet, wait till you have a 500 dollar power each month.
The decision making processes and outcomes should comes as no surprise to anyone. The minister has zero experience of the Hydrocarbon industry as does the Prime Minister.Real hardship for the Ardern-Gayford household on the PMs maternity pay grade while the workers of Taranaki struggle to cope with this incredibly stupid decision.
Oil is along term game. The oil companies will sit back and wait for a new govt that is more sympathetic to their cause (meaning profits) - simple as that.
Labour doesnt care if Taranaki loses billions, they are building 18 new houses in Sth Auckland.
Megan Woods said it was all about future proofing. Really. So future proofing is all about being 100% reliant on imports, shipping in by sea in oil driven ships petroleum products. And being totally at the mercy of negative off shore events that will effect our energy security. Her logic defies, well logic and she is supposed to be a minister.
Labour, increasing our carbon foot print while being hypocrites in one easy step...
A decision not to extract oil and gas is never permanent, as the oil will still be there, leaving such a decision for future generations to make. Extracting the oil and gas just leaves these future generations with a degraded environment and less options.
The oil will still be there for the future.
So why not use the income derived from oil exploration and production to subsidise green energy start-ups and help clean up our fresh and seawater environment? Surely using old technology to create new technology and using oil based products to create green alternatives is good for everyone - unless one is an intellectually dishonest or intellectually lazy greenie who has not the slightest interest in how modern materials are made - including solar panels, wind turbines. Try making them without oil.
right up there with the first things to be recified in 2020.............
what a bunch of clowns the current government are, nearly on par with the Christchurch CC.
This is what happens when you put ideology ahead of the economy and the welfare of all citizens both of which would have benefitted from an oil boom.
Shutting down oil is future proofing our economy.....are you having a lend of us Megan ?I cant wait for you to feel the squeeze when OIl goes back over $100 a barrel and the pain at the pumps is felt..... you will be working hard to justify all the tax you impose , thats for sure
Hopefully you are not a hypocrite and use an electric car by the way does it have a lithium battery and how will you dispose of it when it is stuffed. So you agree with coal powered power stations or are we going nuclear , coal would be worse than gas.Are you usingcandles
This is quite an achievement by Jacinda, not only has she destroyed thousands of well paidjobs in Taranaki but she has also done big damage to NZ economy. We now know she wasadvised by MBIE before she made the oil and gas ban that the end result would be more damage to the Global environment not less. This is because we will need to import replacement Ethane from China where it is made by burning coal , not gas. Rather than giving us the spin ie(future proofing NZ economy) she should admit to having made a serious mistake and withdrawthe ban.
Labour Party is going to make New Zealand bankrupt can some one please tell me where they will make up from oil and gas revenue
Just shows the level of understanding. All those products are from imported sources. Stopping extraction of oil and gas, just means you import more of it. You know in those big oil fueled tankers. The labour party decision increases emissions and pollution. Extraction doesnt produce emissions. You using the stuff does.
Its called the oil price. Not really that complicated.
