"Hey teachers, leave them windows open",

In my school, we do not have any windows that can be opened. Not one. Its supposedly a smart building that regulates everything to optimal levels. So that means the roof leaks (its a brand new building). Wind whips past so fast, doors have to be locked so they dont blow open, and off their hinges. I have to switch the lights on an off every 10 minutes to make the room bright enough to read - even though the smart building tells me the optimal light conditions based on the light coming through my non opening windows is, well optimal. We cant walk down walkways along the building because of ice in winter, so parts of the building are closed. Didnt think to put a roof on bits of it.We wore jackets all year because the self regulating heating wasnt - and we had no means of heating the spaces ourselves. Who sits in an office or teaches wearing a full length overcoat? It took them a year to believe us. We even brought in thermometers from the Science department. Other parts of the ulding were sweat boxes because of the opposite problem - no cooling. No wonder we all get bugs. No fresh air, hot, cold, dark...welcome to modern learning environments. Give me an old prefab any day of the week.

Wow, one classroom tested constitutes a study. This country is stuffed if this is the quality of advice being provided to government.

Maybe we should start with allowing children to wear WARM clothing.

With some of the garbage coming out of the MOE, they clearly need to open their windows too!

Good, I worked in stuffy classrooms for years and its not comfortable for the children or support staff, most teachers seem oblivious to it. Next thing to tackle is overheated classrooms apparently the ministry has a lower limit for temperature but no upper limit.

Thats appalling. Its been proven that one of the main reasons for Florence Nightingales success was that she advocated for lots of fresh air and sunshine. Natures disinfectant.

As a long term asthmatic I can categorically state that sitting near an open window is far more likely to muck up my lungs than keeping the windows closed. I need a more or less consistent temperature. It doesnt matter much to me if its cold or hot so long as its not changing all the time.

Hope you dont drive past schools or burn the toast. Kids shouldnt be poisoned at home.

Open the windows in my school located on a main state highway and the traffic is so noisy. An open door is a wind trap and papers fly everywhere. In an ideal world .... sigh... yes more windows would be open.

Next study - using the term loosely, will show that classrooms are (a) too noisy because the windows are open by the busy road (b) too cold because the windows are open (c) too hot because the windows are open (d) not secure because the windows are open .... take your pick. How about letting common sense prevail!

you needed to study this....Cripes Dave they will study anything to be relevant....anyone with an once of commonsense knows fresh air is needed or you fall asleep....we breathe air so the better the flow of fresh air the less likely to nod off

Basic common sense that should be applied to housing instead of blaming landlords for medical issues in damp crowded houses.Fresh air is good.

Sounds like the new highschool in queenstown..

My wife is a teacher at a large Auckland secondary school.Due to growth, apart from the class sizes of over 35, they also need more classrooms. In most cases, these are portable, temporary classrooms ie prefabs. Her school has over 30 of them. They dont remain portable because there is no register of them with the Ministry, so they become permanent. The prefabs (many decades old) have no insulation. Due to Fire Regulations and electrical limitations, they dont have heaters or air-conditioning. The result is that they are as cold as five degrees in winter...You want all the windows open?

If I opened the windows in my classroom theyd fall out they are so rotten. I was told that the block would be renovated when I started at the school six years ago. Nothing has been done yet. Heating and ventilation in all school I have ever been in has been awful.

What a stupid suggestion! The windows are single-glazed, the walls badly (or not) insulated and the heating system is a big fail. Instead of opening the windows (and freezing the pupils), they should double-glaze the windows, insulate the walls and install proper (central) safe heating in the school.

I wouldnt have thought that was rocket science.

If you bothered to read the linked scientific paper, you would know it was a case study.

Try working at a school near the Queenstown Airport with open windows .

Is that heading tounge in cheek I ask? Leave Them Windows open. Are these the teachers we should be paying more? When did the word those disappear? Leave THOSE windows open.
