Inland Revenue apologises to frustrated taxpayers

Im afraid the public is correct and I worked for the IRD for 20 years and the service has deteriorated. They have gone for more technology and less human contact. Its even worse when they play the music If I was a rich man while you are waiting, does not bring the public on too much. With less staff, they do get overloaded and simply cannot handle it at all. Remember IRD, its our job to be fair was the motto when I was there. Wonder what it is now?Cheers Archie

Shouldnta made us all redundant huh? Well, surprise surprise.

What ajoke. Wait for a year or two and the excuses will flow for their $2b failed transformation.

MyIR online services were up the creek yesterday as well and still cant get my PTS done...hopeless!Cant wait to see the POS that the $1.5billion taxpayers are paying for!

yep they made all the experienced staff redundant and then realised it later so hired new staff who didnt have the training and made muck ups along the way.I have always wondered how much it cost for all the redundancies they paid out and then what it cost them to rehire again.there should be an enquiry into it.have never worked in such a caustic environment in my life and grabbed redundancy as an excuse to get the hell out of there

What a weird conclusion. The IRD and the government are one and the same? How long has that been the case? Or do you expect the government to start answering the phones at IRD? Or are you suggesting this wouldnt have happened under National? One of the reasons for your difficulty is the National governments policy of under-resourcing departments like IRD.

Thats one industry I really wouldnt mind if they stayed on strike and shut it down for a few years.

They have been this inefficient for a couple of years! Very hard when you are a small business calling them and tying up the phone that brings in the money that IRD wants to clip the ticket on!!!!!Talk about biting the hand that feeds you!

And youd still get a fine. I had a situation where I was told to pay an amount, so i did. It wasnt quite right. The calc was done by them so I paid the remainder which ended up being too much so they refunded me minus the fine for late payment of the original amount....think theyd refund the fine after a complaint. Not a chance. Their system is broken before its begun.

Thank you for calling IRD. Your call is important to us. Please continue to hold.

Quite unfortunately that is what almost all heads of NZ state sector do. Before I joined the private sector, I worked for 3 state departments and the same thing happened over and over. They get pressure from the Ministry to show performance or do reforms and the easiest thing is the latter. Then the big boss pull the Samurai sword and start chopping the lower and middle level, mostly useful staff only to recruit new, inexperienced people later. In this process, the top management somehow retain their portfolios and continue to thrive with 10-15k annual increments. Then what about efficient services to the public? Errr....Who the heck cares about that??

The online system was fine when I eventually got around to doing my return yesterday. I suppose Id better check that I do get my refund paid though.

.........until the next tax year.

Glad to see I wasnt the only one having issues. But they were happening on Friday, when I spent 53mins on hold.If it werent for the music playing at the other end I would of hung up after 5 ins. lol .Music was good, but oh wait, my phone might go flat, so sadly I had to hang up.Tried again today (monday). Waited 20mins, then left a call back message.Low and behold, someone rung me back about 30 mins later.Sadly they couldnt help me. And couldnt direct me to the right dept.Makes me wonder why we have an IRD. But your music was stop on, on friday. Ill give you credit for that.

So they spend several billion on new technology yet still 63000 people per week need to phone IRD to sort stuff out. To the workers at IRD who are planning strike action what impact do you really think its going to have, the work you dont do on the days of the strike is not going to go away so what will you achieve

Oh NO! The non-producers are planning to go on strike! Tell someone who cares.A wise old geezer told me years ago.. The day is coming where the non-producers will outnumber the producers and the producers will say Enough, No more! The Producers will be forced to go bust trying to pay the non-producers and themselves will become non-producers, and when everyone ends up as non-producers, the cycle will be complete.

Its big deal if you are trying to pay and avoid penalties!

This isn't surprising considering that they now have temps on effectively zero hour contracts with no job security at all working for them. The IRD contact centre has to be one of the worse places in NZ to work - thenpay is crap, you get interrogated if you take sick leave, they promise you career opportunities and then constantly stifle them because their turn over is so high!
