Christchurch mayor Lianne Dalziel has vowed to hold an independent inquiry into why a vital clause that would have made it easier to build houses in coastal communities was missed out of the citys district planWhy not just walk down the stairs from her office an just ask OK Who Stuffed up!? Why, (yet again) spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on an independent panel when a simple question has the same result??Personally I would have much more respect for an elected Council member just saying yes we stuffed up on this than dodging it

Having met the above a couple of times, I personally thought (at the time) he was a bit of a wet blanket however he has now proven to be a decent representative of his community. In this instance I believe he is standing up for the greater good (again) of his community that elected him and it doesnt matter whether I think he is right or wrong the very fact he has stood up like this he has my support..

Mr Wilke is an ex CCC employee and a SPOKES Cycling Activist group core member, how even remotely are his comments, views or plans even remotely in the best interests for Christchurch!?Definition of activist one who advocates or practices activism : a person who uses or supports strong actions (such as public protests) in support of or opposition to one side of a controversial issue

And yet looking at the actual statistics, rental cars make up a large proportion of these statistics and yet still no mention that there are over 5 MILLION 200 thousand Registered vehicles on NZ roads (source NZTA) and over 1 Billion 6 hundred thousand Private vehicle journeys made each year..Never let the facts get in the way of a good story

+14−2

Why does this smell more like CCC buying votes rather than genuine care for its workers?I fully support anyone earning a fair wage for a fair days work but it does have to be exactly that and as Cr Gough stated there will be consequences, For every action there is an equal and opposite Reaction

The ironic part is Otakaro with the cost of $28 Million have also include a statue of a man mowing, not lawn but Grey pavers and Stones (picture above) with not a bit of green in sight (apart from the obligatory native flax)This on top of the $30 million for the east frame, grey pavers and stones including the Manchester St disaster itself ALL of Oxford Tce,grey pavers stones, Concrete terraces and a tilt slab wall.Otakaro was supposed to be the Govt agency leading the way for the rebuild of Christchurch, yet they have caused more damage to The Garden City than Mother Nature ever could

When Local Government dictates the way we Eat (fast Food outlet control) the way we Drink (forced Alcohol legislation) the way we travel and commute in our daily lives (cycle priority) and now where and how and where we should live, the council becomes less a public entity for the people and more a DictatorshipIt is not nor has it ever been the Councils job to control our daily lives or the way we live them yet CCC continues to force their own misguided we know whats best for you ideologies onto usThe ONLY thing CCC should be doing right now is sorting out their own organisation to make it easier cheaper and less bureaucratic to design and build our own visions our own homes and buildings the way we want them and how we want to live in them and how we travel to and from themIn years to come this CCC Social Engineering experiment will without doubt be proven to be a complete disaster.

As the importer of Segway/Ninebot Good luck. Yes my scooters and all wheeled devices work fantastic however being a realist and in Business for over 30 years I understand what works and what doesnt, what is posted above... doesnt. All of our products are great for commuting 2-3 KM above this they just dont work apart from recreationaly It still seams that we have Councillors and Council staff more willing to jump on the band wagon for looks and image rather than common seance

The basis of this story, the Nielsen Survey is completely irreverent, unbalanced and extremely misleading. The basis of its findings are only on the total of 485 Christchurch residents of which %30 of those stated they are currently Unemployed, This is not and cannot in any way be stated as a 1 reflection of the general majority of Christchurch residents.Yes the city is recovering but certainly not in the way these recent feel-good advertorials have been trying to persuade us, We have a long way to go yet and I would personally prefer that these CCC based organisations spent less time and money on Spin-Doctors and Artists impressions and more on just getting the job done.... like they are supposed to.(CCC, ChristchurchNZ, Regenerate Christchurch, Development Christchurch, Otakaro: are you reading this!)

Yea wow amazing figures. Worcester st a whole 55 a day, Colombo st Edgeware 260, Sparks Rd (Quarrymans trail) 150 a day and St Asaph St 197 how remotely is that thousands??The other thing to consider is that the cycle counts are variable and as you say its spring which just proves that cycling isnt a viable Alternative to any other form of transport, note that i havnt mentioned the cost to ratepayers not only to build these but also the loss of business where these cyclelanes are located and to the residents who now have to live next to them.

Wellington has a population almost the same as Christchurch and yet its Rail / public transport systems is one of the best run and utilised, transporting almost the same amount of people each month as ECAN (bus) does here each year (3.1 vs 3.8M)Rollerston to CHC is similar distance from The Hutt to Wgn CBD and Rangiora to CHC is similar to Porirua (line) to WgtnI think it is very short sighted to discount this

+8−1

Funny how there is nothing in this article stating the number of serious crashes or incidents where a heavy vehicle is at fault, I would imagine this has dropped steadily over the years.especially with the increasing numbers of vehicles and the distances travelledApart from a couple of High Profile bus crashes from minor operators (where the media get all excited) it is more than evident heavy vehicle safety has improved to the point where stricter enforcement is not needed, with the ORS, maintenance, strict H&S compliance and GPS systems run by most companies these days most compliance and safety issues are sorted. When the MOT and Police combined the Government at the time promised us this would increase Police numbers and as such a much lower the crime rate, how many speeding tickets are issued Vs burglaries, assaults and domestic violence incidents solved these days??

The reality is if CCC were even half competent and had everything else they were actually supposed to do sorted like supplying fresh clean water the roads and footpaths were in good condition free of rubbish and rates were actually reasonable this wouldnt be such an issue..

+9−3

The Transport Minister and NZTA all need to jump into a mini van and travel from one end of NZ to the other, pick out the worst roading issues and fix them in order of of priority be it straightening out corners or building new bridges and go from there.Of course its not that simple but building the large projects first without sorting out the smaller things first is a bit illogical

+5−0

I agree. With CCC owning around 2500 Social housing units in the city it is unfair for the general ratepayer to be subsidising the living standards of others on a long term basis, no matter their circumstances. We already have Social Service providers namely WINZ and Housing NZ so why are the Council competing against these government agencies?I cannot see how having two separate welfare providers doubling up on the same service is cost effective or even beneficial to those who use these services, especially considering how badly both these services are run

+7−2

This seems more like a Knee jerk reaction to all the previous failures and negative public reaction rather than good business planning or even common sense Having two separate, adversarial organisations such as CCC and ECAN even attempting to run anything more than a bath let alone a transport service together is always going to end in failureThis service should be run by the transport providers themselves (Redbus) who can much better react to route changes and provide the service needed, having two separate bureaucratic organisations only doubles up on all costs, causes complete confusion and provides the service we have now.The goals and priorities of this should be to provide the service needed and more important completely remove all ratepayer subsidies NOT look PC or pretty in the media

Living in the middle of town I have noticed that there are more and more parks becoming available. Driving down St Asaph st today it was more than noticeable the amount of parking available, the lack of pedestrians and funny enough cyclistsIt is more than apparent people have given up not only on St Asaph st but the CBD as well, you would think that CCC would have learned from this absolute disaster plan for An Accessible City and even worse they now have plans to bring the same stupidity to the suburbs

+9−4

I fully agree however its not just at the top there seem to be a few in middle Management that seem to be doing OK as well. The biggest issue however seems to be the actual Number of staff working at The Hereford Hilton and i dare say the caliber of them who turn up for lunch each day. It would seem that we have at least one University graduate for every single possible job in the place and the a Consultant for everything else in between

+6−1

I can understand that the concept of Regenerate was well intended when it was formed but the time has come to just say STOPTo date this organisation (like many others like them) has proven to be incapable of performing anything other than to pay the wages for its staff and fees for Consultants with nothing to show for it but a promise.Regenerate has had its chance, failed miserably now its time to get rid of them

How remotely is putting the speed limit back to 50 on say Montreal going to attract more boy racers, they dont obey the rules in the first place heance the name!It wouldnt be that hard to have digital speed signs having 30kph at peak times on streets such as Montreal during the day and 60kph during the night and and low peak hours. This along with the traffic light sequencing can quite easily be monitored and changed by CTOC

The CCC currently owns approximately 2400 housing units and no matter what way you look at it or what Trust is running it this is a non performing Council Asset that costs the city around 40 Million dollars a year just to operate.2400 x $400.Thousand each (guestimate avr value of each unit) is getting close to a Billion dollars of un-affordable rate payer owned housing that should be sold off and used for the core services CCC are supposed to be performing in the first place or at least reducing the current debt.We already have a social housing provider with Housing NZ, how is it possibly in the best interests of anyone having CCC competing against another Govt agency? We already pay for this through general Taxs, why should we be paying Again for the exact same service through our Rates!?Even in this article it tells of empty houses worth millions of dollars just sitting doing nothing, why have these not been sold off so it can at least these houses and sections can be developed privately providing more housing in these lower social economic areas and at the very least improving the value of other housing in the area to the benefit of everyone? CCC are pretty quick to sell off their old Kias and Corollas for new BMWs on lease (hire), why would the same not apply here?

1 Oct 2018: CCC Mayor Leanne Dalzeil announces $20 Million to be spent enhancing Taggers rights and to provide safety harnesses and protective clothing to protect the safety and rights of all known taggers. From 21 Oct 2018 property owners must allow all taggers to perform their art on all privately owned property without hindrance, Police must now assist. The mayor responded that this current spending is in line with all other previous CCC spending on minority groups holding their hand out for Rate payer paid funding

+10−6

There are approx 1900 on street car parks within the CBD, 600 less than 2010. The majority of alternative parking is located on private land and operated by companies such as Wilsons. These car parks will eventually disappear when the building sites they are located on are developed leaving a massive shortage in the CBD.Of note, the metered parking in 2010 had over a Million Paid parking events

+3−0

Cyclelanes are completely new, separate and extremely expensive infrastructure designed and built exclusively for a very small minority groups use, no other vehicle or pedestrian can use them yet they are the only infrastructure paid by the majority user (motorist) to the detriment of eveyone else. They have proven to be a complete failure in every respect

+7−4

What do you think Fuel levies and RUC are used for!? Vehicle owners are the ONLY ones who actually PAY %100 for their own commuting and travel costs.(on land)- Commuting by public transport each fair is subsidised up to %60 by payment from the National Land transport Fund (NLTF) to ECAN that is %100 financed by collection of Fuel levies, Road User Charges Tolls etcIf motorists didnt have to pay to subsidise Public travel, cyclelanes and walking tracks and the money collected was spent where it was originally intended we would have the most modern, safest roads in the world

+8−5

This is very much incorrect and misleading. .OCHT is only a Council Trust that is only responsible for the Management of the housing stock still owned by CCC. Between $30-40 million of ratepayer funds is spent each year on social housing or approximately %3.4 of the total annual budget in the last financial term

+4−1

These Regenerate fairy stories all seem to start off with a Artists impression then followed by words like potential, estimated and then Public fundingThe fastest cheapest and most reliable way to get this whole area developed faster, smarter and at a fraction of the cost would be to first disband Regenerate and let community groups develop it the way we want it

+5−3

SanFrans parking system suits San Fransico not Christchurch. Why do these Consultations have to copy everyone elses ideas and designs, can they not come up with something innovative that actually works for us by themselves?, One look in the CBD shows how completely wrong these designs and ideas are and how badly they dont work. Viastrada were also the ones who came up with the failed bus priority lanes on Hills Road that had to be ripped up costing ratepayers Millions and lets not forget St Asaph st High st intersection etc

+9−7

The only possible way that this can be completed successfully would be to keep CCC (and VBase) competently out of the picture. We have more than enough talented local business owners, Hospitality Entrepreneurs and property developers whose talents could be combined to develop, design, organise and run this and rather than giving the actual build itself to a large corporate builder (IE Fletchers) let the smaller Local builders contracts plumbers etc that normally wouldnt be considered (due to over the top PC H&S bureaucracy ) play a part.I imagine This would result in the build would be on time, under budget and without half the stuff ups we read about with all other similar sized projects.

Canton: what a load of rubbish, the cost to build a cyclelane in Christchurch is currently $2.8 MILLION per km, did a cyclist build them . NO. they were built by trucks diggers and people with jobs, they have INCREASED congestion in the CBD simply by designThe majority of the cost to build them was via the NLTF, cyclists themselves to use them dont pay a cent

+6−5

Thats like saying what slows down the flow of water through a pipe is water, not the fact that there are now various obstructions in the way.The only way to increase flow is to have a larger pipe and increasing the speed of the flow with as little obstruction as possibleApprox 25 thousand people flow down St Asaph st each day, (well they used to) if you had 25 thousands cyclists riding down the cyclelane it would be mayhem so in reality cycling is the most inefficient means of transporting the same amount of people, not to mention freight and all other road users

+7−6

up to $2 Million, 12 to 15 months?? Please leave the Council out of anything to do with this other than approving the move itself or else it will be tied up in bureaucratic red tape and indecision for years and will probably end up looking like a traffic light planted in the middle of The Avon riverAward the contract directly to a local specialist (IE;Heavy Haulage / Crane contractor) it would be completed in a week for much less than half the cost if CCC ran this themselves

+2−1

Im not sure if the rules have changed over the years but if the building being demolished still has predominate structure IE a wall or in this case substructure columns etc then it still has consent for that type of building in the future IE the building has been repaired not rebuilt. (grandfather rights)I would also imagine theres some tax and insurance benefits being claimed as well

+2−1

Trains: all very well if any of your comments were remotely factual the reality is the cyclelanes in Christchurch are VERY expensive to build are extremely badly designed they have impacted communities and businesses along the routes where many have reported substantial business loss because of them. According to ACC they have caused MORE accidents in the CBD than ever before and certainly HAVE NOT decreased costs for ANY resident! The reality is Facts outway any unsubstantiated opinion by C.A.N.s (Cycling Action Network)

Its absolutely embarrassing the media reporting on everything Pink, why not just report on her concert at the time and leave it at that!? The one great thing about being a kiwi I would have thought we respect our visitors no matter who they are for what they are. I would imagine Pink would have loved her visit much more without having every move being recorded
