Christchurch City Council pulls out of negotiations with bike share giant Mobike

So instead of getting bikes on to the new bike lanes the council goes for motorised scooters which travel on the foot path at 30 km excellent

Well done CCC. I dont suppose you have tried to organise a booze up in a brewery, I wouldnt bother.

The council is switching from the current operator because of cost issues, wow pity it isnt that easy to switch my council because of cost issues as quick

Yet another demonstration of council staff ineptitude!t

Why is council involved?

The reason they didnt work in Melbourne is that most of the bikes were destroyed or thrown in the river. Sounded like a good idea on paper.

It means we need fewer cycle lanes, doesnt it? Lets do this! ;-)

Not much. And it is not a hoax, as climate has always changed and it always will.

Did the City Council, in the long term, have its eye on the electric scooters?

I do not understand this recent fad where councils and the government want to improve traffic movements with bike lanes and bus lanes. When in actual fact they slow down traffic. Cars are constantly slowing down or stopping for bike and bus traffic lights which most of the time are emplty. Have they not noticed that more than 90% of the population drive? They should be improving road facilities for motorists, not the 2 or 3% of cyclists and bus users. Has no one realised that that bike lane or bus lane could have been another car lane. And hey presto the traffic congestion would be halved immediately. Simple. Some of the so called complex problems can be so simple to solve.

What about the local consultants who won this RFP for mobike. Will they be returning the money they got paid for leading the city astray?

Just a teeny weeny bit of sanity has blown through the council. There is not a sufficient market to justify spending even $1 of ratepayers money. And the council says it has learnt a lot. All they had to do was phone a few long term businesspeople. But no, they had to find out themselves how tough negotiations can be with hard nosed businesspeople. And all at the expense of ratepayers. When will the council get out of being everything to everyone? It has to stop seeking to control every aspect of peoples lives. The people need to regain their freedom from council.

Our focus is shifting away from procuring a single service and instead focusing on enabling infrastructure and overseeing regulations.FINALLY!

Well I guess the hidden message here is, if it was successful and people were riding bikes they would stay. Time to rip up the cycle lanes then.

So judging by your comment below your all for the cyclelanes then and admit theres a traffic congestion issue?green lane disease thats how tRump would try to spin it.

The trial has not been a financial success. If it was, there would be no need to seek ratepayers funding.

Its better to make decisions on real information and facts rather than imagined hidden messages though isnt it?

Sounds like Council picked the brains and local knowledge of Christchurch Bike Share, dumped them for a flash overseas company and got taught a lesson about how the big boys play hardball. I feel sorry for Chch Bike Share and hope they stay clear of CCC in the next round. Dont see why CCC need to get involved anyway. Private companies are quite able to do business on their own merits - stand or fall depending on their level of demand and service. Of course, only the CCC has the never-ending cashflow of ratepayers to suck dry, so perhaps we can thank Mobike for getting out and relieving ratepayers of yet another financial burden, at least till CCC dream up something else.

pity the green lane disease cant be got rid of so easily!

Exactly! They would rather endorse more unused cycle lanes and statues that catch weeds in the Avon!
