Does Wagstaff not understand that the GDP figures are retrospective while consumer and business confidence figures are forward-looking? Clearly not!We will not see the damaging impact of the governments bad economic policies until well after they are implemented. This bunch cannot take any credit for growth holding up in the meantime.
no...its called reality and fact.are you denying that GDP is based on what is past or already happened, and business confidence is based on what is to come?
Does this Minister understand anything about financial policy get rid of him before he has us bankrupt as all he seems to do is grin and try and convince us he is doing a good job.Has he ever owned a business like most of those Labour led government MPs and NZ First MPs and those great Green MPs that are not elected.
Sigh, so we are still beating the business confidence drum. How about some facts, Business confidence does not always relate to economic growth. Consumer confidence & export market economics drives that The economic consulting business BERL has found a distinct lack of correlation between business confidence and the performance of the economy: âBetween 2000 and 2008, when Labour last led the government, business was pessimistic for 82 months, yet the economy grew on average 3.2% a year and the government recorded nine years of budget surpluses. In contrast from 2009 to 2017, when National led the government, business was optimistic for 87 months but the economy grew on average just 1.98% a year
GDP per capita growth is a more important measure than simple GDP growth... and the annual per capita growth rate is continuing to fall.
give us some examples of businesses taking less risks
Wouldnt matter if you had Jesus in charge of labour, business confidence always falls under a Labour government. Of course that doesnt always correspond with what is actually happening with the economy
Wagstaff is a pro Labour unionist who will say what needs to be said to make this government appear more competent than what they really are.
There is and has always been a considerable lag between business confidence and GDP numbers. The GDP we are seeing now is attributed to business investment in 2016/17 coming to fruition. 2019 and in particular 2020 is where the Ill thought out ideas and lack of research of the NZ First led coalitions policies will come home to roost.
I had my own business until I retired. The one thing I know with regard to business prospects is that very little can be done by any government in NZ be it blue or red. When the financial crisis hit that was created in the US within 6 months the turnover halved. We now have Trump in the US creating another crisis that will hit soon or perhaps a little later and there is little little NZ can do about it.
So the ANZ business confidence survey showed a negative result. You would think after 9 years of observation of the last corrupt, lying and thieving government people would have learned that any organisation headed by the bent and twisted fork tongued iguana was best ignored.Yet here we are day after day being propagandised by Hamish into thinking there might be something of substance there.Maybe under the next National government Hamish could apply for the chief science adviser role considering his ability to tell a story contrary to all available evidence is almost unequalled in this country.
Clearly you have no idea at all about being in business.
Bit of a stretch referring to high school project start-ups as real businesses.
Now that the ANZ Business Confidence Trick is exposed, perhaps the media could try to be better at spotting the self-interest in some of the stories they blindly pass on. Fortunately, Jacinda and Grant were not fooled, and played their own little confidence trick, letting business leaders think that the government would actually listen to the Business Advisory Council advice.
Thought hed be okay as National leader but really seems to spend all of his effort jumping at shadows unfortunately.
And here is Labour trumpeting GDP as the saviour of their policies. Oh the irony. Before last years election Jacinda said neoliberalism had failed. Seems that Labour is National lite after all and doesnt know where it stands in the political and economic world.
but Bridges said lack of business confidence was on labour before the results came out. So if the economy tanks in the next year would that still be national? Where do you draw the pick and choose line?
Business confidence is fiction. Doesnt matter whose in Government. Economic growth and indicators are the 1 measure. Both are, as forecast, better than expected.
Did you want to know under National or just now? Figures have to be in to be measured
Not so much as a sham as a ploy by big business to try to destabilise this government.
