Royal New Zealand Ballet temporary home in central Wellington gets green light

This is crazy, I'm all for the arts but it is impossible to find a carpark on the street as it is and the councils last solution to the lack of carparks was to increase the cost by 50 cents per hour. So what are they going to do now increase it again? Drove into town last weekend to take the kids out for lunch and see some of the sites, after driving around and around for 45 mins with no luck on finding a carpark we gave up and went out to Lower Hutt where there are loads of parks and are free. Keep this up and Justin will get his wish and only those willing and able to cycle from Porirua and the Hutt will come into town.

I really tire of the waa waa cant park my car drama BUT Wellington is facing a real issue with parking. there werent many parks to start, add a few earthquakes and now theres a hell of a lot less. no big deal, public transport! oh wait we mismanaged our busses and now have nothing to show for it. To top it off the council have said stuff off and refused to develop park and ride services meaning even public transport isnt really viable.Im all for supporting the arts but I think Wellington and the other regional councils need to come up with a solution urgently to the transport issues theyre having. Its an embarrassment.

Its great that the St James and old Town Hall are finally getting some work done. However are there not some other venues that the dancers can use temporarily? there are plenty of suburban facilities that only get used for weekend and evening sports, when presumably the dancers are daytime hours. $2.9m is yet another big cost for the long suffering ratepayers will no doubt be forced to pay, add it to the debt mountain I guess. Anyway good luck to the ballet.

We take the bus. It's great! :)

Both the St James and the old Town Hall were refurbished within the last 20 years. It is testament to the incompetence of the WCC that both were not earthquake strengthened then.

Hey heres an idea instead of massively funding 2 groups in arts.(nzso, rnzb) how about we give some to say EVERYONE ELSE IN THE ARTS. It is absurd that with the largest group of wealthy benefactors that they still need to hog the governmental money too. How about nz fringe? Or nz comedy fest? Or arts on tour. There are some many more needy causes than these groups stop pampering the prima donnas!

It really is turning into a terribly difficult job to crowbar NZers out of their beloved vehicles, isnt it. Maybe a lack of parking will squeeze them out. Its a new approach and worth a try. In the meantime, we get to support one of NZs few remaining cultural bastions under threat from the resounding scream of rugby becoming our only culture.

Porirua has plenty of space. A daily shuttle bus out there for them all would be cheaper also
