There is a lot of scientific evidence around if you want to look that shows that women and men are equally violent within relationships. Google it. And surprisingly, there is little difference in the intensity, at least in one study that I have read recently for students in NZ (Psychology Dept VUW research - led by women!). This is not apparent from the reporting in the media - women are winning that battle. The concern for both men and women needs to be that if we focus on sorting male-on-female violence exclusively then we are missing half of the story and how the kids are influenced by what they see. The story they are getting is that it is OK for women to be violent. But not men. So we have a generation of very confused boys and young men in particular, who feel guilt and shame for being males but know that the women in their lives are just as violent and nasty. Until we acknowledge this reality we are dealing with only half of the problem of relationship violence and so it persists.

Oh well, another forest with its native animal and bird life sacrificed to unreasoned panic, all so the pig hunters and their dogs can have their fun. I am appalled that the local iwi have been sucked in by the anti-1080 people who put emotion before reason and evidence.

Bees are killed in the process. In their 10s of thousands. The process of breeding, transporting bees and extracting honey results in a lot of deaths. To say nothing of the unnaturalness of it. But then vegans think nothing of eating living organisms anyway so why do we think of them as better than the rest of us?

I have only ever seen one such cyclist. He wasnt wearing a helmet. He didnt have lights even though it was advanced dusk. And he was on the wrong side of the road. But he was happy - for how long I dont know but lack of cops around means that hell never be caught let alone penalised.

It gives us a good price which makes us more competitive. If we didnt, your food would be more expensive. Maybe that justifies it, maybe it doesnt. Is it much differnet from buying milk derived from confiscated Waikato lands. Or bananas from colonised South American countries. Where does it end?

It depends who you believe. And of course DoC cant say anything critical of the iwi because ultimately they want them on side. But those with anti-1080 axes to grind (soley due to the effect on their treasured pigs (which are a vector in the killing of the kauri) jump up and down on the basis of very little evidence. Its time that the iwi called in some people who the ytrust and who know the truth about how useful 1080 is.

It is the job of reporters to ask questions and keep asking until they get an answer instead of evasion. Trump was evading and blustering so the journalists job was to keep asking and probing. What do you want journalists to do - take everything said by politicians as 1 and accurate every time and not proble further? And the intern assaulted him - she made the first physical contact. But I suppose that a mere male is not allowed to resist any more?

But I guess that at the age of 14, you have it all sorted out in your head, and dont remember that happened in Germany in the 1930s and 40s. Try maturing a bit - many are poor because they had their kids then they lost their jobs, wives, husbands - how do you work that into your system? How do you punish the parents without further affecting the kids? Got that sorted too?

Its electrically powered so it depends on how the electricity is produced - in NZ thats about 90% renewable sources so not really a problem with CO2 emissions. Better than a bus or car? Probably. Manufacturing footprint? About the same as a car?

If this was Rugby there would be calls for heads to roll, and what a thuggish game it is, and mollycoddling mums taking their little darlings out of the sport. But it is soccer, so no such headlines. It is a good game to play, boring as hell to watch, and the game that those who think that they are gods gift to sport go to, but without the talent. Oh well.

Thank you. And it must be a boost to you to hear that Simon Bridges supports your strikes (Morning Report this morning). A pity he did nothing about the looming problems when he was in a position to do so.

To Andrea Taylor: If what you say is 1 and significant, please explain why the bird life flourishes after 1080 drops. Because the effects that you are talking of are insignificant. Except perhaps for Keas?

The punishments that we are using do not work very well at stopping offenders reoffending on release. In many ways they come our worse - trained in how to break the law better, bitter and hardened, very anti-social, still illiterate - so the problem gets worse, not better. So perhaps we need to be smarter and do what works, as evidence shows us in countries like Norway and Sweden. What we have shown is that the harsher the punishments the worse the crime rates. Look at murder rates and death penalties in the USA.

And what makes you so sure that science works that way? It does a damn fine job (like developing the theories which underpin our ability to communicate in this way) and is the best system that we have for understanding the reality of what is around us; but do not expect miracles as that is the property of religion.

Whats your problem with that? It all evens out after taxation anyway. I take it that you want someone to be able to determine who deserves the pension and who doesnt - you have more faith in the bureacracy than I do. And anyway, what has that got to do with the article - it is about illegal denial of employment to people over 40 because of their age.

Yes we do because some motorists think that it is their right to overtake in situations which are dangerous fo rthe cyclists. And many motorists open their doors without checking if there is a cyclist coming, and so they knock them over. Note that hese streets are 30kph streets so being slowed down is not an issue.

No it is not. Read the article. It becomes on-side as soon as he lifts the ball, not when he places his hands on it. Strange maybe, but thems the laws. What annoys me is that the ref could see that he was offside - he was standing between Lawes and the tackle ball situation (it wasnt a ruck yet, apparently) yet didnt see that he was offside. Just as he didnt see the incessant offsides by the English outside backs doing their ush defence thing.

Read the article. They were not in the drop zone. GPS records showed a 50 m buffer. Cattle were where they shouldnt be, in the DoC reserve. Farmer got what he deserved. Cattle didnt.

+7−2

Yes they do. I asked about why is there not an option where the fund-managers fee is a fraction of the money she earns for me, but it cuts both ways - they pay me when they lose my money. No way though - they say they work harder in downturns to minimise our losses. A good answer but I d ont believe it.

1080 has never killed anyone. And you would have to eat baits straight for it to do so. It rapidly breaks down into harmless substances in soil and water. It is naturally in tea. Dont believe all that the pig and deer hunters tell you. They are liars. They just want to protect their dogs, pigs and deer. They are selfish.

+8−4

They are hardly unhappy. Compare their lives to what it would be like in the wild - didease ridden, hounded by predators which would eat them and their calves at the drop of a hat - evisceration while still alive if you believe the documentaries of lions, cheetahs etc. Short nasty and brutal natural lives compared with long, comfortable lives and humane deaths. Or are you one of those who believes that nature is all sweetness and life, where the lion lies with the lamb. And while some calves are killed very young, most would die young and unpleasantly in nature anyway, so they are no worse off.

There is no Oil and Gas ban. There is a ban on NEW permits. Existing permits to explore and exploit are still in operation. There is no shortage of gas in NZ and not likely to be in the near future especially if we take out some gas-guzzling industries - like the urea plant in Taranaki, which produces all that nitrogen for fertilizers which damage our groundwaters, rivers and lakes.

Id like to ask journalists if they are aware of the harm that these articles do. They are written out of prurience - to get a reaction, to get a few clicks, not to improve things. By constantly harping on how the occasional thing goes wrong in proper medicine, practitioners feel beseiged, they get risk averse, and the general public loses confidence. It is as if the journalists expect medical practice to be perfect every time. It isnt. It never will be. There are too many variables. But it does a very very good job and lives are longer and better for the vast bulk of us as a consequence. So why undermine the science and practice with mischevious articles like this? Focus instead on the alternative medicine practitioners - whose claims are not matched by performance or even by evidence. Report when they go wrong, when they rip off sufferers. Youll do a much greater service that way.

When you look behind you, you tend to swerve out. So we dont do it much. Bring on electronic rear vision systems. But yes, SH58 does not cater well for bikes, so slow down and give them a wide berth. They have the same rights as you to use the road.

+7−4

Apart from the incomprehensibilty of much of what you write, it is completely legal to ride two abreast and in many situations, it is safer. Just slow down. Whats the real hurry after all?

+12−10

I thought that the article was saying that despite the work being done by farmers and others, and despite the rules and regulations, that it wasnt working well enough and so the rules and regs need to be tougher. Which is tough on the farmers but then they do vote for a political party which was too scared to institute effective measures. If we want the problem cleaned up for goodness sake, farmers and others, stop voting for the political party that was so ineffective.

+22−20

And the theory about how electricity and radio communication is just a theory but you just managed to communicate your viewpoint. By your reasoning it cant be 1. But it works and so does the evidence about human induced climate change. The understanding of how science actually works is woefully lacking here.

Hear Hear. At last a sensible comment. Cars create the congestion, not bikes or buses. So target the cars - bikes will solve the congestion issue, more cars will make it worse.

+9−7

N is an element. You need nuclear reactors and similar technology to transmute one element into another. Alan GAWITH was presumably pointing out the loose use of language in the article which uses the word nitrogen to mean nitrogen -containing compounds like urea and nitrate salts.

Naivity rules! How does he imagine that we as a country pays for things like our coffee bean imports, the materials and machinery that he uses in his business, his clothing and shoes and medicines? It pays for it by swapping it for products of agriculture, and a lot of that derives from animals. If we didnt have that income we would be a very poor country indeed, with huge health issues. Reality has an unfortunate way of biting fools on the bum!
