We are not so much getting ripped off by the fuel companies as much as by the government. 50% of the cost of every litre goes to the government in taxes. The GST component is not going to roading improvements and all we will see from this is more uncontrolled spending increases from ill-disciplined local authorities.

I am not sure what evidence this economist is basing his predictions on but his theory is not supported by international evidence at all. In Australia, for example, there was no immediate change to the market following the introduction of CGT and the family home was not exempt.

Sorry Mark, I dont buy your argument. Many New Zealanders get a real kick out of Steve playing in the NBA and doing NZ proud, we also see the huge effort he puts in with kids in New Zealand so questioning his commitment to NZ basketball is simply nonsense. He is making his contribution in other ways than turning out for the national side and fair enough.

You are arguing that one form of income should be taxed while another should not. That simply makes no sense at all. What does concern me however with this government is an apparent desire to keep increasing the overall tax take. If they introduce capital gains tax there should be a corresponding decrease in income tax to ensure the government is simply not sucking more and more money out of the economy because they think they are better at spending it than we are.

You may think this article was written by chicken little himself. A loss to Ireland in Ireland is not the end of the world as we know it, the sky is not falling, this is not some sort of calamity that needs some royal commission of inquiry. The All Blacks were beaten by a side that was clearly better on the day. The team has been winning too easily for too long and thank god we have contests to watch again. I have a great deal of confidence that this group including the coaches will address the areas of weakness the Irish exposed and be the better team for it.

3.9M tourists are projected to spend $11,248M in NZ this year. Assuming they pay GST for their Goods and Services while here the GST collected from these tourists will be $1.5B. The Government now want to fleece these people for another $137M. Already NZ is a very expensive place to visit so why would the government want to potentially risk damaging NZs largest export earner. A 10% increase in tourism numbers will generate more tax through GST than this entry tax so why on would the government put this at risk? Its insane
