Victoria University of Wellington is very clear - not sure what the problem is. If its simplified to University of Wellington, fine - no big deal. But if the aim is simplification, why come up with a new Māori name instead of the current translation? If overseas students are confused about Victoria University of Wellington Id love to know what theyd make of Te Herenga Waka, the hitching post for your canoe. Theyd probably think its affiliated to our navy.

There are many people who have difficulty with spoken communication - either from birth or through brain injury, for example following a stroke. My dad has stroke related problems with speech (aphasia). It takes a tremendous amount of courage for these people to communicate face to face with people who dont know them and are not aware of their struggle. Most people are patient and understanding but in this instance Starbucks first underreacted by offering $5 (US) then overreacted by firing the barista. No one wins here. The barista more than likely did not intend to offend - he just didnt think. Training and an apology would be a far better outcome.

Culture is not static- all cultures appropriate! Sharing food is a way of bringing people together in most cultures, so it seems especially ridiculous for someone to think that a dish is off limits unless its authentic to their taste.

Nothing to do with international students. Redundant, duplicate courses leave polytechs and universities encroaching on each others territories. No one wins, least of all students. For example, Masseys nursing course has been reduced to online delivery to save costs while Whiteria has a state of the art nursing facility. The whole sector needs an overhaul.

NZ doesnt owe him a job. If he cant get one we dont need him. A school I worked at employed a Philippina high school teacher as a teacher aide while she was looking for permanent employment as an English teacher. She couldnt get a job but wouldnt go back home as she would not be able to enter NZ again. She couldnt support herself on a teacher aides wages so the staff at school had a whip round so she could buy groceries. We are too soft. Other teacher aides, low wage earners, helping out someone whose skills were not needed and who had good job prospects, a husband and children in the Philippines.

Parking is tight because the council car parks were closed after the earthquakes. There is already a two hour limit on the parks. Charging for them wont create more parking, just disgruntled customers who might decide it isnt worth the bother of visiting the CBD.

Fine if the supermarkets pick up the tab for below cost items to entice customers into their stores. But they dont - they squeeze the manufacturer who has no choice if they want products sold in our two competing supermarket chains.

Regardless of $, unless they are housed in tents, they still occupy limited housing stock. It doesnt feel good to look after refugee families better than fellow kiwis living in overcrowded flats, with parents, in garages and sleepouts. Kiwis who cant afford to have children of their own.

Agree, schools cant do anything. Its best if kids can sort it themselves but failing that Id step in. My 5 year old daughter had a friend who was bullied by a kid whose parents had just split up. She knocked him to the ground. The teacher saw but pretended not to - she was pleased my daughter was sticking up for her friend. The boy became good friends with my daughter afterwards - he saw her as someone strong who would protect him.

But if self service is introduced then the number of checkout operators will be reduced through natural attrition or reducing hours so people have no option but to look elsewhere or try and pick up a second job. Fewer employees then becomes another reason to cut supervisory positions. And they will need to cut the wage bill to pay for all the technology they are introducing. Bye Warehouse - I already avoid Kmart because there is no human service option.

Language learning is easy for preschoolers. But by 6 or 7 kids find it harder to pick up a second language. We have ESOL kids in our schools who start as 5 year olds and really struggle with English but their preschool siblings do better as they tend to be exposed to more English earlier.
