Just wanted to suggest to people living in cold housing that they try putting an extra blanket (preferably woollen) under the bottom sheet. Sounds nuts but it really does make a huge difference!

My daughter and I get together on a Sunday and make a batch of savoury muffins for our work lunches. Different flavour every week depending on whats in season / the cupboard / the garden. Sociable, fun and money saving, takes about 10 minutes to put together a batch and 30 - 45 to bake. Cafes charge $5 for a muffin, we dont spend anywhere near $60 for the dozen that we make every week. Im even making my own tin liners from baking paper these days!

Wes McGuinness, there are things called hot tubes that might help to move the warm air around depending on your situation. You have to be slightly careful when googling that! We made one from plastic downpipe and a computer fan that sucks the hot air off the ceiling and puts it out at ground level. Cost about $60. Until we did that the ceiling was 35 degrees and the floor was 15. We have an old villa with a 3.4m stud, its partially insulated.

We also live in an old villa thats partially insulated (ceiling & South wall)Were with Flick and our weekly power spend varies between $20 & $27.Power hungry things we run are the oven & cooktop and the hot water cylinder. Heating is a logburner. Your $600 per month sounds excessive and definitely worth further investigation.I wish you all the best with that :)

Sarah, if you are working as much as you are able to and bringing up your children to become positive contributors to our society, then you shouldnt feel bad for receiving a WFF payout. Part of the problem is that salaries in NZ are low and the cost of living is high. An additional challenge you (and other solo parents) have is that due to work and childcare committments, its really difficult for you to upskill to get into higher paying work. All the best to you :)

If I have the misfortune to have to go to a mall, I try to go as soon as it opens or around 6 when people generally have their dinner. Theyre all the same. Eventually (sooner rather than later in many cases) all of the stuff for sale will be thrown away to join the vast quantities of landfill we make. So far we are able to hide our waste from view.

Yep, when I was growing up we had ice on the inside of the windows in the 1930s weatherboard bungalow that my parents still live in. Theyre now in their mid 80s. What you say Rachelle, plus possibly the average house size has increased markedly from the meagre 90m2 that me and my brother grew up in.

Reply to The_one, just a standard 100mm plastic downpipe and a couple of brackets. Have the top of the pipe close to the ceiling. Put the computer fan at the bottom of the pipe sitting on a right angle bend to direct the flow. You need to have it near a power point to plug in the fan. Not very pretty but it is effective, we did sciencing to prove it! Ours shifts approximately 1m3 of air per minute. Good luck, I hope it works just as well for your situation.

What many do not see is all the background work that has been done to cancel and reschedule all the appointments at such short notice, only to have the strike itself cancelled. The staff who do this work are in a different union. They usually find out the latest information via the media, often with a very short timeframe to organise it all.

Until we accept that we ourselves dont always embrace and support Maori culture, we are just as much to blame. Its a case of pot kettle.Link below to another Stuff article!https://www.stuff.co.nz/auckland/104218555/please-speak-in-a-language-99-of-us-understand-racist-remarks-derail-maunga-meeting Spurious remarks about Mandarin or Cantonese are irrelevant because Te Reo IS the language of the first people of Aotearoa.
