Religious groups should have no impact on this conversation. Its a matter for doctors, psychologists and patients.
As usual, religious freaks thinking they can tell us how to live our own lives. They have been trying to do it for centuries. Mind your own business and live your own lives.
Churches dont pay taxes so they dont get a vote
Ive always found it strangely odd, we have a failing pet and we get it put down, it would be inhumane to let it suffer.Yet with our terminally ill and elderly we dose them up to the teeth on drugs until their organs and bodies give out. If your projection is weeks if not a few months and your prospect is a miserable death in hospital care dosed up on drugs, then I support your right to go on your own terms and avoid a grisly end.
repeat after me... separation of church and state... separation of church and state...if your religion tells you its wrong then, please, by all means, dont get euthanised.... but its not your right to force your religious teaching on others!
Religion is a personal belief. For this reason it has no part to play in the decision of an individual to end their life.
Religion should not have any sway at all in this debate. We dont refer to the Book of Mormon to set our alcohol laws or to the Quran for deciding on age of consent; why would we refer to the Bible for euthanasia law?Any person in our country who holds religious views are free to carry on their lives how they see most appropriate and we should protect that fiercely. However it is absolutely wrong for someone elses religion to dictate to another via law how they should live or die.
Why is religion even a thing in2018
We shouldnt even listen to a group that clearly demonstrates mass delusions about some all powerful being in the clouds
Nz is a hugely diverse place when it comes to ethnicity and religion and if your beliefs or culture means you cant do something why should others decisions and rights be influenced by YOUR belief..
Youd have to be bereft of a basic level of empathy to not see why a desperately ill person should have a right to assisted death. The Catholics have opened themselves right up by drawing on their own history. Didnt the church kill a hundred thousand Cathars, men women and children? Their history is a litany of mass murder and witch hunts.
Your religious views should end where they impact on the choices of others. Until you can definitively prove that your religion is correct (in other words, never) you should not use your relgious rules to try and dictate how others should live or die.
Religion is not a reason to not allow something. If Im on a diet I cant tell the person next to me theyre not allowed cake because my diet doesnt allow it. If you believe something because of your religion youre perfectly entitled to but I dont need to adhere to your rules. If your religion is against euthanasia then dont partake in it, the same s abortion and other such controversial topics.
Forcing a person to stay alive and endure intolerable suffering is every bit as evil as taking the life of a happy, healthy person.
I would challenge his assumption that the CC have always been involved in helping people close to death therefore they know all about it. The CC have also been the cause of that in many cases i.e. in recent human history when on Africa they vehemently opposed contraception and told millions there it was a sin to use condoms......how many listened to them and died from AIDS?
The Catholic Church has strong credentials to speak in societal debates about dying and death? Im sorry but every single person alive religious or not has exactly the same credentials in this debate. Non religious views on this are equally as valid so sorry Catholic Church you have no more say over this than anyone else.
Thats fine, all you religious people out there, you can die under your own terms as well, you can suffer in agony until your god decides its your time. You can do that, but you absolutely CANNOT tell me that I cant choose my way. You have no right to impose your beliefs on me, I want to be able to choose if things ever get unbearable.
I strongly believe we should uphold the rights of people to worship and live their lives by the tenants of their faith. In so doing, I also strongly oppose them telling us how we should live our lives. My father died unmanned in pain begging me to kill him, no matter the united request off our family that doctors help ease his pain even if that meant he left us a little (days or hours) earlier, their hands were tied by current legislation. Palliative care no matter its claims did not help my father and I suspect the same is so for many others, not withstanding the claims of some in the field, the anecdotal evidence is compelling. To our religious people, your right to live by your faith should not mean people like my father are condemned to die in pain.
I wont do this because of my religion. Fine.I dont want YOU to do this, because of my religion. Not fine.
What a person does with their own life should be upto them
