You just cant rely on the weather any more, except to know that at times it appears increasingly unpredictable.

So proud of NZs history and role in Antarctica, little country, big mana.Love to go there but not to winter over Id miss the light, even the winter sun is better than none.Hope the weather sorts itself out for those coming and going in the deep deep Southern land.

Indeed. I was going to say this country is scientifically illiterate but its not - its greed and laziness, pure and simple.These people arent idiots, they can understand basic science if they want to, but if they pretend nothing is wrong then they dont have to spend any money on fixing it nor have to change their damaging behaviour.The least they could do is be honest and admit that they simply dont care about others.

I agree. If the temperature is too cold, there is insufficient moisture in the air to form snow, (e.g. it never snows at the south pole, its too cold) and you are less likely to get storms like this. A little bit warmer, then snow forms. Well spotted, Tobi!

It is fun to wind up the those who think the end of mankind is at hand due to climate and who actually believe that mankind can change the climate back, what will be will be and there is not a lot we can do about it.Hard to turn around the habits around of 6-7 billion people in any significant way.

Actually global warming increases the amount of water vapour in the atmosphere and hence more snow in cold climates. There is also more energy in the system so that intensifies storms. We are seeing that all around the planet. Global warming predictions have always included more intensive snow in winter especially in the northern hemisphere. Over 20 years ago there was a common saying âglobal warming could mean the freezing of Paris❠this would happen if the Gulf Stream stops flowing (it is losing its intensity as predicted).

Extraordinarily depressing to read comments that say so much for global warming etc. Amongst other things, global warming is the long-term trend in the rise of global temperatures. Individual weather events neither prove or disprove its existence. What does prove it is the fact that global temperatures have risen at the same time as humans have released millions of tonnes of fossil fuels into the atmosphere.

Must be all that dangerous man-made global warming causing those freezing, non-summer like conditions.

GWPF for starters , plenty there including an article from NASA stating ice in Antarctica is being lost in the west but gaining in the east , end result ?? .The main loss of ice is from west Antarctica which is the largest and densest volcanic region on Earth with over 100 volcanoes under the ice.

If it wasnt for the American support New Zealand would have an extreme small if not non existent Antarctic program. RNZAF Hercules do very few flights each summer and they land on an American prepared ice runway. We rely on an American Coast Guard ice breaker and US fuel tanker and container ship to get all the fuel and supplies down there. If NZ wanted an independent Antarctic program it would probably be something like less than 12 staff in small huts like Greenpeace had for a couple of years in the mid 1980s when they had 4 staff at Cape Evans monitoring the Big Boys, that is McMurdo and Scott Base.

Hey mate read my comment above about how much fuel it takes to get one gallon of fuel to the South Pole. But it doesnt matter cos they do good science at the South Pole.
