Old cars arent a cuase of accidents just a representation of what cars we own. If we all had cars that were less than 5 years old I suspect they would cause 100% of the accidents.

Too right. The NZTA study earlier this year identified driver inattention/distraction as the single most common reason for accidents (deadly or otherwise).Its the drivers, not the cars.

Stop focusing on the road deaths!Instead, we should be focusing on accident prevention. The only reason that deaths have declined in the past is because cars are safer in collisions. Drivers are more stupid though, cars are faster and easier to drive, and drivers are more disconnected from the road and their surroundings, so accidents are increasing. Is it the roads fault if some idiot drops a hot pie in their lap? Is it the roads fault if some idiot drives too fast for conditions, or drives drunk, or doesnt indicate, or drives without headlights, or goes through a stop sign.... the list goes on. Think before and during your drive!

There has been research in Europe that proved INATTENTION IS THE MAJOR CAUSE OF ACCIDENTS.NOT SPEED!!!!!!!

biggest cause of accidents is distraction. I worry about the people who arent 100% driving hitting me.

The faster you drive, the less likely you are to crash. Youre in the danger zones for less time.

Driver distraction was long ago identified as the actual cause of over 50% or crashes, but due to lazy law enforcement our police force is trying to make speed the cause of all road evil.You only have to watch the homicidal idiots overtaking on the open road on bling double yellow lines to know that the issue isnt them doing 115kph, its the fact theyre on the wrong side of the road while doing it

Why should OLD CARS with a current WOF not be considered safe enough on the roads and cited as a reason for fatal crashes?

So if we work on accident prevention, speed isnt an issue. Look at how fast they drive in Germany. Main difference is they have better cars, better roads and to get your license costs $2000+ and you have 30+ hours of professional driving instructions. People over there are much better trained in driving and because it costs so much they value it more.

Is this really the best NZTA can come up with. Remove seat belts and the drivers airbag, fit a long sharp chromed spike where the airbag used to be and watch fatalities drop.

The biggest distraction see are cell phones, Not a day goes by when I do not see a driver on their cell phone. The classic was a person driving, talking on their cell phone and trying to light a cigarette. Surely there is more we can do to deter this. I walked home from work last night and counted no fewer that 8 drivers on cell phone is a 20 minute walk. How many accident s are caused by cell phone distraction?. I would love to now that.

So having a law against eating when you are diriving will stop it you reckon? Like having a law against using a cellphone when you are driving? Why would you assume that just havinga law against something will stop it happening.....

Im glad that finnaly someone is saying that speed is not the main cause of crashes. The police need to stop pulling over people who are doing 5km over the speed limit and instead focus on bad, distracted drivers and cars which are unsafe.

sometime it safer to speed to get out of a risk zone as quick as possable eg, Passing (wrong side of the road)

Simple mistakes such as a driver dropping a hot pie can kill, crash data shows - but, how can this be!!, were told constantly that speed is the cause of all fatal accidents??.

Which to me indicates driver inattention - they are blithely unaware of the large queue behind them. Try that on a 50cc scooter and see how long you last if you cant be bothered looking for the huge truck sitting up your date.

If youre driving, your concentration should be on the road - in front, behind, and to the sides. Anything else is a distraction. It doesnt matter if youre running late, have kids in the car, whatever... concentrate on your driving. Let nothing distract you. The cost is too high.
