Playground and wetlands among plans to reinvigorate QEII

They should look to expand the swimming poll complex first, it clearly too small for the numbers using it, changing rooms, more pools etc..

Bring back Drive World. That place was made of dreams when I was a kid. So many good times for familys. Mini golf, go karts, train rides and ice cream. Far better than sitting on the couch playing with an iPad or going to the movies.

10 years for a bunch of landscaping and some toilets - that sounds about right with everything we know about CCC and the general state of the construction industry in NZ

So we should do nothing?! I think the community out there will be in full support, and things cost money, just a way of life. Unfortunately Christchurch needs a lot spent over the next decade or so, but things like this are definitely justified.

There is so many lovely established trees on the old Ascott Golf course. As long as the plans retain as many of those as possible, and the area remains open for people to enjoy regardless of whether they are playing frisbee gold or not.

More outdoor activities in the entire QEII complex will reduce the demand for the only facility currently in the QEII complex.

Rusty101 what on earth do you mean. The QE11 land is in the centre of the wards, with great expressway access and surrounded by residential. Its highly valued by more than the east and it deserves the best planning - not that I think this is the best. Its a bit ho hum and could do with more imagination. Only the west side that was the golf course floods and rest of the land has merit to be developed. Thats why QE11 was rebuilt there on communitys advocacy plus the 2 high schools.

Halleleuja !The Council have finally listened to the community if this goes ahead .Would be great to extend the pool to 50 mts but this sis a great assett for the East and especially greater New Brighton area .

Why would you only put in a half basketball court, do it once and do it right

Yes i second this idea! It was great fun. I actually have 1 of the wee motorbikes they had there all those years ago. Still going!!

My first thoughts were how the hell does this take 10 years. Should be 3 at the most. Then I remember which council was in charge and it made sense, will probably take clsoer to 15 and cost 10x as much.

Rather than extend the pool to 50 m and it being closed for alterations to that for weeks and months, how about a second 30m or an additional 50m pool? Ive been twice since QE II opened without getting anything like a decent swim. Facility not fit for purpose re. numbers attending. Did they not anticipate popularity before constructing it? Regarding the various comments / suggestions here there are good ideas and I hope some of them can be acted on. I would suggest to Ron Chad though, that we shouldnt get pre-occupied about the Alpine Fault or neither us nor the Coasters could enjoy life on our beautiful, albeit potentially hazardous, island in New Zealand.

Would need private investment.

The plan shows wetlands planned on the west side of the park.

Looks good - but 10 years? I suppose I may still be fit enough to enjoy it by then!

Agreed. The entire complex is windy and noisy. The kids pool is so shallow, its practically a paddle pool. If you want to see a decent complex, go to Timaru. They have a fantastic facility. Even Dudley Park in Rangiora is significantly better. The only plus side were the showers, which have plenty of hot water.

Im so dissapointed after my first visit to QE2 pool. What a huge loss for us all to have it replaced by a shortfall of a complex.

Another pool being built in Linwood plus the main pool in town which includes 50m pool plus the Brighton Saltwater pools and eventually Hornby. Waiting is a pain but at least there will be a few different options to spread the crowds around.
