The truth behind the Sam Whitelock presentation 'snub'

Keven Mealamu and Tony Woodcock both played their 100th test matches against Australia. Mealamu played his in Brisbane where Nathan Sharpe presented him with a gift and publically acknowledged his contribution to Rugby in the after match. The Wallabies waited on the field also in Wellington when Woodcock was presented with his All Blacks 100th test cap. So, I do find it a little hard to believe that Chieka wouldnt be aware of those types of things. It doesnt take much really. The All Blacks presented John Smit and Jean De Villiers with gifts after their 100th tests. Nonu went off with a broken arm in De Villiers 100th test and made sure his jersey and a congratulatory note was left waiting for De Villiers after the game before he went to hospital.

Cheika say they have respect but not once in his quote does he use Whitelock or Franks names. He refers to Whitelock as the player and Franks as the lad. Just like the build up to the first test where the Aussies never used All Blacks and instead used Kiwis, them etc. Theres no respect from Cheika. Smash them again.

this comment should be read to Chieka at a press conference! Well done.

Cheika is just poisonous, but it shows you the dynamic of the Wallabies when only a handful of their established players stay out on the pitch to acknowledge Whitelocks 100 tests. The last Wallaby player to bring up 100 tests was Adam Ashley-Cooper in Brisbane in 2014 when the All Blacks won with a last minute converted try by Malakai Fekitoa. To a man, the All Blacks remained on the pitch to commemorate and acknowledge Ashley Coopers 100 test matches for the Wallabies, and skipper McCaw acknowledged it in post match interviews. Whether Cheika is deliberately disrespectful I am not sure. What I am sure about is that the Wallabies, both in terms of their lack of success and toxic culture are going nowhere with his toxic attitude in charge.

The player and the lad?!! Very disrespectful to not even bother to learn who they are. Thats why youre a clown Cheika. You keep donning the big red nose and expect no one notices.

Exactly. Chieka is simply uncouth.

Chieka born yesterday? The amount of centurions we have had in the past 8 years and hes really going to claim he didnt know how we celebrated them? I mean if youre going to be that arrogant just say you didnt care

The fact Chieka cant even say their names is quite telling. Congratulations to the player... (Whitelock) same to the lad this week (Franks).Does he really not know who his opponents are, or is there some other reason he chooses not to acknowledge their names? Its pathetic. Like trying to ignore the haka as Campo did, or refusing to call them the All Blacks as a few British coaches have tried. Grow up, rugby world.

Genia, Foley, Hooper and Samu just gained my respect.

Shameful media.Hansen never implied the Wallabies were disrespecting Whitelock and likewise Cheika was full of praise and just the last little bit To say that we lack respect is a little bit of a stretch from Steve Hansen because the media spun it that Hansen thought they were disrespecting to get a story. If Cheika had seen a transcript of Hansens 1 comment he probably wouldnt have said anything.

This comment makes about as much sense as Chieka persisting with Tatafu Polota Nau

Nope youre just missing the point. The reason this is a big deal is because when Jean de Villiers played his 100th in Wellington four years ago, NZR and the All Blacks put on a presentation for him which included McCaw saying a few words in acknowledgement and presenting a small gift. They also acknowledged Bryan Habana who played his 100th the week before, ironically against the Aussies, in Perth. When Hansen said we would stay out for it, he not only meant it, the team has shown it. His comments were otherwise pretty diplomatic but inside I hope he and the team are absolutely seething.

Well, Ive never seen it before. We certainly wouldnt be asking to do it on another teams ground, wed do it in the dressing room,I guess Cheika missed the presentation NZR and the All Blacks put on for Jean de Villiers and Bryan Habana in **Wellington** for their 100th caps in 2014?Up till now I just assumed the Wallabies simply didnt know what the All Blacks were planning for Whitelock and all would have attended if theyd been told. But now it looks like RA knew all along. And either RA didnt think it was important enough to tell Cheika, or they did tell him and Cheika didnt think it was important enough to tell all his players. Hansen shouldve just come out and said it.... thats incredibly disrespectful from the Australians. Especially compared to what the All Blacks put on for de Villiers. I hope the boys are quietly seething over it and use it as motivation to dish out a hiding for the ages.

New Zealanders hate Aussies.. Speak for yourself mate, I get on great with them.

Its expected because its been done before. By the All Blacks and by the Wallabies themselves. And because playing 100 tests its worth recognising. If your employer didnt recognise 22 years of service then you wasted 22 years of loyalty.

Understanding the NZR and RA discussions puts Australia in an even worse light. If RA knew all along they either didnt bother telling Cheika, or if they did, Cheika didnt bother telling all his players. Given the respect shown by both teams in the past for this milestone thats just... uncouth.

Way to completely miss my point.Refusing to say All Blacks or face the haka is just stupid, and has backfired spectacularly on those that have tried it. By refusing to acknowledge it you are saying its something youre scared of, or at least that it has a mental edge over you. The best results have been when sides acknowledged who they were playing and manned up to the challenge - like France do, like the Boks do. When teams run and hide they get smashed, not because the ABs are fired up more but because they opposition are clearly not mentally prepared to be there. So Cheika is basically doing the same now. I was expecting an Aussie improvement tomorrow, but now Im thinking the ABs will crack 50.

Perhaps you should stand up in front of 66,000 people and we will see how your speech goes.
