How about the Government meeting the $26 million shortfall if they want the dam to go ahead. As usual, the Tasman district ratepayers do not have a say.
So the Greens will oppose this legislation but they wont oppose legislation that is patently undemocratic (Winnies waka jumping bill). This just shows the real colour of the Greens - theyre red through and through with just a veneer of Green on the outside. And they have no integrity.
Dont even suggest that. This is only the start of the shortfalls - theres roading, site clearance, unstable rocks, new bores inside the stopbanks, land purchase, consultants fees, you name it this is only the beginning and TDC are happy for ratepayers to cover any cost overruns.
Richard Kempthorne was quoted as saying to the Nelson Mail HE DOES NOT CARE HOW MUCH THE DAM COSTS TO BUILDThats a really bad and alarming thing to say
Why should we fund another Damn dam? You pay for it if you want it.
The Mayor has lost too many votes over this to survive i think I dont think he will be re-elected80% or more against the damThats a lot of voters not liking our Mayor any moreHe cant be trusted to keep his word He said he would stop the dam at $100 millionTo be still trying to move ahead with it is not a good look at allIts just an Estimate from TDCIt could be another $30 million or more, Too much could go wrong with the build. With perhaps ratepayers also paying Iwi for waterWater rights are before our government it wont go away The next Mayor may very well not want the damIts unbelievable they are still trying to proceed They have not listened to what the experts have said at allThey need to stop the dam now
I have voted Labour all my life but will never do so again if they back this bill. The irrigation scheme for rich farmers is being financed by theft from poor ratepayers in areasthat derive no benefit at all from the dam.The whole process has been undemocratic and Tasman ratepayers now face the likely prospect of a $200 million debt given the usual cost overruns of dams.
Yes the funding model is crap, its all loaded onto the ratepayers and there appears to be no sensible alternative hence most people oppose it.
My hairdresser told me today that a group of ratepayers have collected over $500,000 of pledges to issue a legal challenge if a go is issued to build the dam. Several live within the area of benefit and do not draw any water from TDC many are from Golden Bay and Murchison. Civil war coming for 15 large irrigators who have hoodwinked weak kneed councillors.
See ya greens
Its time we start getting our heads around that continuous growth on a finite world is not possible. We simply cannot keep chewing up nature for it. We have to learn to live without it. Either we learn to live without growth (especially human numbers) or we learn to live without a planet (good luck with that)
Greens dont know what they stand for. Look at the Waka Jumping bill. At least Marama Davidson left out the expletives this time.
Its not a hydroelectric dam
There is no robust technical advice to say that the dam will not have negative impacts on water quality - despite what Nick Smith says. The TDC has sought advice on a very specific range of issues, and is completely ignoring the increased nutrient loading that is destined to occur as irrigators try to intensify to pay for the dam... This is very likely to degrade the groundwter and even the river. Very short-sighted, and they should not be allowed to neglect this. The Environment Court woud be a good place to tackle it!
Take note Jacinda, youve lost my Party Vote. And, Damian, I wont be voting for you either.Do the majority of politicians understand the Nicks bill will require urban ratepayers to subsidise a few farmers? NZ gave up agricultural subsidies decades ago.Good on the Greens for taking a stand and listening to the majority of Tasman ratepayers.
Tasman District is a Labour party stronghold.Maybe this will change if Labour continues to back the Dam.The majority of ratepayers are against paying for the DamWill this be the end of Labour as our representative in GovernmentIts time to step up Damien OConner
87% of submissions on the dam were opposed!
Will Nick push for no rate increases for the Dam to ratepayers who live outside the dam area and finance their own system, such as the 88 Valley scheme.
Here is something I can agree with The Greens on
The trouble is Damien OConnors partner is a senior policy advisor at the TDC supporting Dam ...... thats I why OConnor is silent
