So dropping a c-bomb isn't OK, but rape threats are?

Neither are OK in my opinion, but the threats are much worse than public profanity and should be treated more seriously. Charging a few internet trolls with threatening assault or something would be a public service. Some trolls make these vile threats using their real names and photos etc, so it wouldnt be hard to track a few down.

Thats hardly the point. People should be able to use social media and express opinions without receiving death threats. Disagree with what people say by all means. But keep it verbal

If only there was a way to avoid Facebook... if only.

I gather from this article that white males dont get harassed online. One survey shown by some commentators show that men are harassed online more than women. Also that the biggest harassers of women were other women.Harassment online is a problem that all people, no matter what sex, race, etc, face. Michelle only looking at the harassment of women is only trying to fix half the problem.

Maybe its just where we live or where we work or who we surround ourselves with- I personally have not been threatened in that way nor have I been told to be nice and smile. But I dont have a high profile on social media ( or much of a profile at all) so perhaps this is part of it. Social media and all its forms make it easier for men and women to be the most awful versions of themselves. All the threats, bullying, trolling and so on wouldnt be happening as it does now if there wasnt a screen to hide behind.

Whats sad is how many people actually make fake profiles to abuse people online and to try and get them fired up. I know of dozens that regularly troll the local news pages. Many of them are easy to pick with no picture or picture of an inamnimate object etc. However a couple lately that looked genuine turned out to be fake and used the pictures from someone elses profile who left their profiles open. These included family photos and all. The 2 genuine looking profiles were discovered due to one person knowing the person in the photos and the other was by someone else doing a photo search and finding the genuine owner was American. Who is it that spends all this time making these fake profiles just to abuse and annoy other people?

She found the difference in abuse for men and women - even on the same show - was marked. Men were more likely to receive bad feedback based on what theyd said, while women received insults based on their gender.Nowhere does the author suggest that white males dont get harassed online. However threats against females also tend more towards personal violence (eg rape) than threats towards males.

If you can read that story and believe that white men are getting anywhere near those levels of hatred and threats then Ive got a bridge Id like to sell you. As a white male Im talked and written about many controversial things and never had that level of abuse. Ever. Im incredibly privileged, but it seems many of my kind dont want to acknowledge that.

As a transgender women I get it simply because I live and breathe and its on a daily basis and often to my face

Im a woman and I know... Being a woman doesnt qualify you to tell another woman shes wrong. Like an African American cant say hey, theres no such thing as police violence against blacks in America, I should know cos Im black... Thats not a qualifier to speak on everyones behalf. And anyone using the term academic feminist sounds awfully threatened by educated women.

It hasnt related to a vagina since shortly after Chaucer. Thats about 600 years ago. Its been a positive and negative character descriptor since. Its contextual, but not anatomical. So let it go.

I have read the article by Charlotte Graham-McLay that is presented as research into gendered online abuse, it was actually harassment across digital platforms on high profile women in broadcast journalism. Not a report on online trolling and the differences between male and female targets. There is also a link to an article about clementine ford, an australian feminist and what she deals with with trolling..... the fact that she has posted things like kill all males and other offensive and troll based remarks on twitter and FB, while claiming to be a victim of trolling ? yet shes held up as a victim of trolling, not a person that also starts it herself. Can anybody see the problem ? the focus is on get MALES in court for online threats... not ANY person that crosses the line.... and thats why so many people are getting annoyed with the constant victim female threads and articles

Its only a problem when men do it apparently.

What a stupid article. Why does one thing have to be ok if the other is an issue. Both can be (and to varying degrees are) issues. There is no world where threatening someone is ok. For a lot of people it is highly offensive to use the âc❠word. Simple.

Since when is using a c-bomb not ok? Thats news to most kiwis Im assuming..

Huh? We get sexually harassed every time we open our mouths? News to me. Even adjusted for hyperbole, your comment is just plain un1.

Possibly because she comes from Samoa, just as an American author comes from the USA and a Scottish author from Scotland. Its not unusual for non-NZ authors to be tagged with their nationality in a story about them here. Given the context of this story its probably there also because the writer believes or wants to imply that there is a racist element in these online attacks as well.

This is silly. Almost nobody thinks that rape threats over the internet are ok. The problem is that the police simply have very little power in practice to do anything about it.

Bit sick of threatening behavior from women too.
