I thought after 14 years of watching the ABs dominate Oz I would tire, but nope still love it when they win.
The Solution for Australia is simple...Start winning and they will return...Duh!
The Australian cricket team held the Ashes for 18 years before finally losing them in 2003. I dont recall them ever feeling too troubled about their dominance. The unfortunate truth about Australia is this: when theyre winning, at anything, they delight in rubbing your face in it. When theyre losing, they act like they dont care.
You must be careful of articles like this. The Wallabies have had their golden eras and they tend to pop up when the Kiwi public least expects. The grand slam Wallabies team in the early 80s whos era finished with a Bledisloe win at Eden Park in 86. The 90-91 Wallabies that broke The ABs unbeaten run then won the WC with a bunch of, at the time, no names. The same in 98-99 to 2002.Yes that was a long time and the ABs since 2007 have had a culture of excellence that only a Bok and England side has got close to but only for a short time. There is plenty of will and motivation for Chieka and his boys to win the Bledisloe.... never take them lightly. On a side note.. not sure that 1 million people tuned in to watch the womans state of origin, the ratings i heard were more like 300,000+. But yes compared to other codes Union is struggling especially when AFL can get 80,000 to a club game at the MCG.
Funny that, when we booked and paid for our tickets couple weeks ago, there were very few left.
Ireland are ranked second and have beaten us for the first time ever under Schmidt. That loss to Ireland still hurts...
BS, Am Kiwi and have lived in Aus for 28 yrs, great place, good people, lots of oppourtunity, one flaw with the Aussie (male) sporting public, if Aus dosnt win (any sporting fixture/code) â˜oh, they lost, didnt watch it, dont care anyway, I only follow the League but when they win, they dont let you forget it, hence the popularity of League and Cricket where they dominate, though I think Cricket may take a tumble in the next few years in the wake of the SA controversy. Should they every get the Bledisloe in their hands there will be 3 or 4 million rabid union fans telling us â˜Kiwis cant play union believe me, Ive heard it before, thanks to Mr John Eales.
Australia actually could have won 2 of the 3 tests last year, though admittingly they were smashed in the first test. I dont think this AB side is that good that they couldnt lose if they played badly and Australia played really well. But its a bit like in test cricket, they really have to believe they can actually win.
Not quite 18 years. 1989 to 2005. 15 years. But your right , no one cared the Ashes was dimished when Aus dominated.
Lets just keep winning.Go the All Blacks
Well its put paid to the myth that we need Aussie rugby to be strong for us to be as well. The last 15 years has shown that not to be the case.Me, every time the Wallabies mouth off or start jumping around hooping and hugging after one of their once in a blue moon victories, Im primed for another 15 years of dominance.
Soccer is more popular in Australia now
Spot on, Keep the foot on the throat #uptheabs
Might not care over there But over here Australia is the greatest threat in any Rugby, The team that if they wake up could do some real damage across the world not just to the All Blacks, We were close to losing in Dunedin as well if we AB supporters care to remember. we must be afraid, be very afraid hence why they are not taken lightly by Hansen and co ever.
England already sufficiently demoralised after finishing 5h in the 6 nations and other loses.Re kiwi joe Schmidt driving Ireland to never before reached heights - un1 they have won grand slams before and have held the number 2 ranking before. Not sure either pose any more of a threat to ABs than rugby championship sides.
A-League rating and crowds down 40% last two years, big football codes and big bash cricket seen to that
In truth, theyre usually rather short golden eras. And, going through most of what is their first choice side, in particular the backline, all bar one or two will be over 30 post World Cup, so theyre going to have to start a rebuild. They might be waiting a while for another era.
98 to 2002 Aus side had bonafied stars with established combinatios who reached two WC finslals and were very very close to a double in 2003. In contrast the ABs thought they could just turn up and win with any old side back then.
Like whats been said before Portland, and this is guaranteed, the Wallabies start winning consistently against the ABs and watch the flood of Aussie fans back to the stadiums. The 2011 Super Winning Reds experienced great crowds. I know, I was sitting at Suncorp stadium among them all.
Bledisloe is certainly not âimmensely popularâ in Aus. Would sell out stadiums otherwise. Does not seem to interest anyone but the most die hard wallabies supporters.
