The author of this article Carmen Parahi writes, He (Don Brash) used his free speech to try to obliterate Maori out of New Zealand society. If you dont believe me, read the speech for yourself.
After reading her article objectively then reading Don Brashs speech objectively, I couldnt find any evidence in the speech using it as a platform to try to obliterate Maori out of New Zealand society. After reading Don Brashs speech (I would encourage others to do the same, thanks for the link), I changed my mind and now applaud it too. Some might say the author of this article may have extreme views at the other end of the spectrum. In the eye of the beholder I guess.

As a pakeha born here in 1969 I too have experienced racism and exclusion. Growing up in Waitangirua being told im a white maggot daily by the neighbours.I was born here. My ancestors were immigrants. My parents were born here. No rich white priviledge in my family tree just state housing and state school. The modern interpertation of our countries history is largely applogist. While I dont agree with Don Brash at all I do believe there is racism and intollerance from all sides. Everyone has a right to be heard. Just like every time I hear the word Pakeha I connect it to White Maggot because as a kid all my Maori neighbours told me thats what Pakeha meant. When I explain this to people in 2018 they accuse me of racism. Ironic that. Tell the truth of my childhoid experience and get 0ly labelled. This debate on who xan express an opinion is no debate at all. It cuts both ways and I for one am tired of the trend of evryone being oh so offended on behalf of everyone else.49151120Brent Hutchison
Having read the speech referred to by Carmen Parahi, I couldnt see any evidence that he (Don Brash) was trying to obliterate Maori out of New Zealand society. Don Brash has every right to his views as much as Carmen Parahi does, she is certainly giving her views and I dont think all New Zealanders will agree with her either.

Carmen claims to believe in Free Speech - but actually she only believes in & permits others to hear speech that she decides is agreeable. She has claimed for herself the right to define what views and speech are extreme or unacceptable (does she ever stop to consider that she may hold views that others experience as extreme, unacceptable or offensive?) and then stops others from hearing those views and making up their own minds. Is that because she believes that she is more intelligent, or more moral, or more enlightened than other lesser people?  This is 1984 elitist double talk - the terrifying road to authoritarianism.

I dont agree with Don Brash on most things, but you lost me at white, old and hopefully nearing its use-by date. That clearly shows your own prejudices. Would you tolerate it if that statement was brown, young and hopefully just a fad? No? Then you are a hypocrite.40341916nzcaddis
She likes free speech ,provided she agrees with it
She has appointed herself moral arbiter
Those who disagree are racist , some âphobe â or another, definitely a nazis

The leftist âfreedom â

You just dont get it do you Carmen? You say you do but then just shoot yourself in the foot by providing more attention to him and a massive platform for his views by denying him. The uni students are intelligent and would have challenged him in rebuttal if they so chose. You are the very problem you seek to solve. Moronic.

I felt betrayed by New Zealand because so many people applauded his speech then and still do now Says Carmen Pariah.
Surely this says people have different opinions from mine and I dont like them, so I say they are devisive
Who then will be appointed the official arbitrator of what is devisive???

I believe Don Brashs has the right to voice his opinions as much as you do.....does anyone stop you from writing on this weblink !!!!30031313Brett Fruin
After reading the Don Brash speech that was linked (Thanks for that), I really agree with the guy he made some really good points and this was back 14 years ago, Carmen says he wanted to Obliterate Maori? seems like Maori are trying to do that themselves. they make up a majority of prison inmates for violent crimes and child/spousal abuse, they cant keep blaming poverty for it. Its got nothing to do with the Treaty anymore its just down to choice. And they are making shocking ones.
Pointing out facts is not racist, but people will twist it to suit their narrative.

Good god man are you suggesting the common people form an objective opinion?
How dare you
Cue: selective outrage

They were heard but there were consequences to their use of free speech, as there is for everyone who publicly expresses extreme views. !

What planet have you been on ? The main issue is that Southern and Molyneux werent heard. They were prevented from being heard. To me, your views on Brash are extreme and racist - should you too be de-platformed ? Should you be threatened with consequences for public expression of extreme views ?

There is only free speech or controlled speech, if you want your speech controlled then move to a country where it already is.If you want free speech then just voice your opinion on what ever you disagree with but dont stop others voicing there opinions.I think its called debating.2192267Soloscaff
(His view) is old - ageist comment,  white - racist comment, and nearing its use by date - just plain nasty.  And just how many people will be hurt by your comments?   Or maybe it does not matter because they think differently to you (or are old, white and irrelevant).

Please understand free speech is always going to offend someone who thinks differently. Open debate on issues is healthy and necessary for society to evolve. I dont agree with Brash (although he makes some good points) but I will defend his right to say it,  as long as he stays within the legal bounds of discrimination and hate speech rules - and I trust the authorities to pick him up when (if) he doesnt (which they have not done as yet).

Carmen - your missing a major point here.  Don was INVITED to speak at the University. He was invited so the group he was going to address could make up their own minds as to what he was saying.  He was not going to stand on his soap box on the corner of Queen Street and try to convince unsuspecting passers by. I for one get offended by the mobs of animal rights activists,  religious groups and God knows who else I walk by in the street trying to sell me their beliefs however I dont try and shut them down because they are entitled to voice their opinion in this democratic land.. just like Don Brash is21222311Moggy83
Carmen if you want to believe the rewitten treaty thats your right so what Don spoke that upsets you is the truth not like all the fluffy duffy of the past week 20922314russell75
âImagine what would happen if every Kiwi spoke aloud what was truly on their minds or in their hearts.âYes imagine, because thats all were allowed to do in todays climate of muzzling debate. 19420612anglia
I think stopping people from voicing their prejudices is dangerous.  Youll just drive them underground, where theyll only talk to like-minded people, their confidence will grow, and well not know whats really going on. At least if they speak it publicly, we can challenge their viewpoints and be fully aware of who is out there and what dangerous and inflamatory ideas they may be spreading.  People threatening violence (in the form of clashing protests), to stop them from speaking, are just drawing extra attention, and no doubt followers, to extremists.1821886JDBK
