Why our university needs to stand proudly for Wellington

Harvard? Yale? Stanford? Monash? They seem to survive ok without being named after the city theyre in! You have no right to change this Grant, you will move on but Victoria will remain

Victoria University is highly regarded world wide and seldom confused with others. No evidence in this article, its an opinion piece. The money that has already been spent on lawyers should have gone into the students needs.

Which part of Victoria University of Wellington (VUW) does he struggle with?Obviously too complicated for academics.

Unfortunately, the vast majority of people in the world do not associate the words Victoria University with Wellington You will need to prove it Mr Guildford with hard evidence, letters, emails etc. Otherwise you are just inventing a problem that does not really exist. I am hoping that the Minister of Education will decline the name change proposal so that the word Victoria is kept in the unoversitys name.

This name change proposal is based on some pretty fragile thinking. âGreat cities have great universities that share their name. Actually this is not 1. Of course many places have the name of the location in their name â“ so does Victoria University of Wellington! Look through the top 25 ranked Universities of the World. There is no clear pattern, the American Universities generally dont include any or an easily recognizable geographic location, and are as likely to be named for their founder as their location â“ MIT, Stanford,Harvard, Caltech, Chicago, Princeton, Cornell, Yale, John Hopkins, Columbia,Pennsylvania, Duke, Michigan. Great quiz question to locate them ! Just two have the State and one the city of location. Grant complains that â˜the vast majority of people in the world do not associate the words Victoria University with Wellington or with this university, and that â˜Our graduates typically refer to themselves as studying at Vic or Victoria, not in Wellington. Absolutely 1, but lets get a sense of perspective, the vast majority of people in the world wont know Wellington exists and I suspect probably dont know where New Zealand is either. At home Id talk about having gone to Victoria or affectionately â˜Vic because New Zealanders know what we are talking about. If I were overseas and the subject came up Id say Victoria University Wellington and - if needed as likely it would be - New Zealand. And for heavens sake research papers that Ive seen are accurately attributed to â˜Victoria University of Wellington. But the bit that really gets me isnt the fragile international marketing spin. It is the bit about pride in our city and â˜better aligning with and supporting our city and region that really anger me, being a Karori resident. This post is long enough anyway so I might talk more about that and the Karori Campus shortly.

If Mr Guilford is serious about Vic becoming a world recognised uni he needs to address the work place culture at Vic. Starting with management.

Its full name is Victoria University of Wellington. Tells you everything you need to know.

The argument made here is that students should have pride in Wellington. I dont get it - Why? Cant Wellington earn its own mana? And as for people around the world - who cares? I spent 20 years as a lawyer in London and what the law firms there cared about is that I went to Victoria University and studied law there and not a wannabe law school that was coming to law late in the day. It was the skill and dedication of the faculty that mattered.

The name is already Victoria University of Wellington. Although the locals refer to Vic, in writing it is often shortened to VUW.How many people can actually attribute internationally known universities with their geographic location. Where is Yale? It sounds very British, so which US state is it even in? Is Oxford in London? One would assume so, as its the most famous of Englands universities. But for anyone who has never blinked an eyelid at the UK, would they assume its the name of a suburb within London? Does it matter? VUW is fine. University of Wellington would strip it of its longstanding history.

My degree states Victoria University of Wellington. Its called Victoria and Vic but also VUW (The W stands for Wellington). Wellington is in the name already.

There are so many psychopaths in the top management nowadays. Using 0 logic and charming superficial thinking to try to bring their personal small glory.Victoria University of Wellington consists of two names which makes it so uniquely identified in the world - showing its history as well as the recognition of Wellington city. Removing it is a downgrade. If we are so pound of it and want to make it so unique, why dont we put New Zealand University of Wellington? There are other Wellington in the world including US and Canada. Do people need to concern about it? Does the city Wellington in NZ need to change its name? It is totally none sense to remove a historical and unique name. VUW is unique enough! I was an International Student, the Name: Victoria University of Wellington is prestigious! It would be an idiot decision to remove the title. Victoria is Great and Wellington is great too. Keeping the name does not have any problem!

What a load of total BS. The name Victoria was around long before you came along Grant Guilford and hopefully it will be around long after youve gone. The name Wellington is already there! Take a look at the comments below Mr Guilford. Seriously, you should be ashamed of yourself for trying to snuff out a Wellington history that thousands are proud of.

All about marketing. Focus on teaching people stuff. Id rather the science departments got more funding that you messed about with the name. The university isnt a marketing arm of the city. Most global cities (including Wellington) have more than one university, anyway.

Sure but is the â˜vice chancellor proudly Wellington himself? Does he live here full time?

what a moronic piece - for a start its called Victoria University of Wellington - Wellington is already in the name! But the argument that you need to identify with the city the University is in, also looks rather silly when almost none of the worlds top universities include their city in the name. Clearly a vice-chancellor having a personal crusade so that hes remembered for something. It all reminds me of the waste of money and effort that went into the NZ flag change - indeed why dont you follow a similar process and put it to a vote. All present students and past alumni get to vote on either keeping the old name or changing to a new name.

And all this at a time when staff are being told that funds for building maintenance are on hold, as VUW tries to make up for twenty years of underinvestment in routine repairs. flaking facades and a university library with an earthquake damaged lift doesnt scream out quality brand. Building international recognition is important but Parkinsons Law is eating up income in many peoples views.

Did you attend Victoria, Lizzie. I can assure you that it is far from meaningless to those of us who did.

Guildford even refers to himself as vice-chancellor of Victoria University of Wellington. So whats wrong with that name? Ive had various involvements with the university since the early 1990s and the logo that was used on advertising and brochures was always Victoria University of Wellington.

So tell me Grant Guilford , the other day you said it wasnt a personal crusade. But here we are, i presume this article was brought and paid for by the university!

It`s VUW on all the branding. You know what the W stands for don`t you Grant? There`s no support for this vanity project which suggests to me the university will go for it all guns blazing showing their usual contempt for the public & alumni.
