Railcars daily from Christchurch and Dunedin - track in place, people ready. Especially tourists who we are told are going to increase in numbers.
Good idea to use the infrastructure in some way.PS: Mr Jones, when are you going to fulfil your commitment to open the Wairoa to Gisborne line?
Go over on the Trans Alpine Steam to Hoki and back ,overnight in Grey. Return to ChCh. Package Deal. All good for everybody That could be a start
Its a new goldrush.......for the consultants!
The Dunedin waterfront idea is a extremely good one !!
What a load of rubbish. Feasibility studies. Deliver something that will bring real jobs and prosperty to the coast. This is just token stuff and a gross waste of taxpayer money. Time for Jones to go.
Just a lolly scramble for consultants, same with Dunedin water front. This goverment is blowing the cash left right and centre and will acheive nothing..
Great news, but why was the Waste to Energy plant put on hold? Surely burning waste to produce power for NZ is a benefit to us all. This process is used in many countries in the world and with advances in technology emissions are extremely low. Waste could be collected from any where in the south island and transported to the plant by Kiwi Rail using spare coal wagons or large closed in freight wagons direct to the plant. A win win for everyone.
Yes PLEASE!
Westport is the forgotten town. As a born and bred Westport lad, I visited the old hometown in January 2017, nothing has changed, still looks the same after an absence of nearly 30 years. Sadly there is nothing there to encourage the young people to stay there after leaving school as there are very little employment opportunities available. Now the proposal to mine the Te Kuha area for coal, which would create jobs, seems doomed because of the greenies, none of which have ever lived on the Westcoast, understandable because Greenies are not welcome there.Ko Ropata Wirihana taku ingoa.Te Kawatiri Iwi o Aotearoa.
Steam please!
Great trip by rail, but it is also a fantastic drive by car.
If Jones is involved we are doomed, doomed.
Is it just me, or does it seem like all this money for the regions is simply being whittled away on working groups and feasibility studies etc.??? When is this govt actually going to deliver something tangible that really benefits the regions
A passenger train from Westport / Greymouth / Hokitika is great news for the region - will bring tourism dollars to the West Coast and complement the successful TranzAlpine train too. - Brilliant indeed!
I cant wait to be able to catch a train anywhere in the country, we have so much good stuff to look at
Attracting tourists and the $$ they will spend in the region - will complement the very successful TranzAlpine train very well.
The Government has set aside $625,000 to INVESTIGATE starting a passenger rail service between Hokitika and Westport, improving the ports of both towns, and producing a masterplan for Greymouth in between. The feasibility studies would be funded from the Provincial Growth Fund (PGF).Jones said he would be making more funding announcements for the West Coast in the future: the Coast should see this round of funding as an APPETISER.The West Coast grants allow $125,000 each for BUSINESS CASES at the ports, $250,000 for the RAIL TRIP STUDY, $125,000 for the GREYMOUTH MASTER PLAN to rejuvenate the town, and $30,000 for work on a masterplan for Punakaiki township.Working Groups = Consultants = $$$$$$ and NO PROGRESSMay as well give it all to the Mawhera Corp after-all they are really progressive in Helping Greymouth ProsperSorry, but Shane is all BS & Bluster and nothing will become of this
And so much more convenient. Stop where you want to, explore what you see along the way, arrive in Hokitika and drive up the airport hill for a wonderful view. A car will beat rail any day, especially for two or more people travelling together.
Im guessing it will go via the existing Inangahua line, so skips the Paparoa coastal part. Wont be quite as attractive, but always thought the Lower Buller Gorge part looks like a bit of an adventure. Good luck to them, with existing railine shouldnt be too much of a hurdle.
