The ark, the algorithm and our conservation conundrum

It is easy to see how the list order was made. They used logic instead of the highly strung emotive reasons that you noally see.

What a moronic thing to say. Evolution happens over millions of years - the impact of humanity has come within a few thousand, and has accelerated out of sight over the past couple of hundred. The only species capable of adapting to such rapid change is humanity itself, and were the ones disrupting the environment, causing everything else to die out, rather than adapt ourselves and our behaviour to live in harmony with every other species. Your attitude (Im not going to call it a belief because creationism is BEYOND belief) is typical of the thinking (if you can call it that) that has caused irreperable damage to this planet, and unchecked will continue to damage it to the point where we and every other species will no longer be able to live on it at all. Grow up and start thinking for yourself instead of blindly following the misguided dogma of a deluded belief system that ignores evidence.

Its not sure the cute and fuzzy or the tall and mighty that need to be protected. Its also the small, the ugly, the smelly and otherwise out of sight species, that risk a silent extinction, that need protecting.

Its great to read an article that focuses on really important things for a change. Thanks for bringing these little known species to our attention.

They should also be funded a whole lot more then too

There is nothing like total ignorance to inform the opinions of the ignorant.

Comparing a giant tree to a tiny herb is oranges and apples. As all the up-voted comments reflect, a computer algorithm can make a much more logical decision than a human, and cannot be swayed by silly emotive comments from non-experts. I would rather the experts use their algorithms to make an informed decision and spend the money appropriately. Im sure the kauri trees will still prevail as they are of course much more sexy than a fish guts plant - hilarious name BTW.

Excellent reporting well done! I plan to read this a second time in the morning. I wish more journalism aspired to these heights. Evidence-based articles!

DOC have gone too far... By not looking after all..? That is a hearty contradiction! The reason DOC have to make these tough decisions is because they dont have adequate funding and are increasingly being pressured to be tourism managers and not do the job they were originally intended.

Conservation requires tough choicesOnly when successive governments choose to slash conservation budgets to the point where there is virtually no money left

Are you a botanist?

This, right there, is why people dont understand the impact of climate change.

Yeah as this is an unlimited pot of money so everything can be saved.....Try again. And if they are going to be replaced as you suggest who are these replacements? If these other better people existed surely they would be doing the job in the first place.....

Well written article Charlie. Ill look out for more of your excellent reporting!!!!

The point is they simply dont have the resources to adequately protect everything, so they have to prioritise. Whether this method of prioritising is right or wrong s up fir debate, but whatever method is used somethings will miss the cut due to resources available.

Warm and cuddly is one thing. An organisms place in the biota is way more important.

Another armchair expert with a degree from the university of google that thinks they know better then the experts. Perhaps you need to do a basic ecology point to understand the definition of endemic. Oh things that look the same can be quite different species.

what ??this is about rare and vulnerable species not plants that do well without our intervention

This is a great article, thought provoking, looking forward to reading the next part...
