We drive the poshest pickup around, the Mercedes X-class V6

Ive driven the 4 cylinder and was amazed at how refined it was. Very quiet, very tight and absolutely un-touchable as far as handling went. All car companies share components and technology within their alliances, they always have so I dont know why people keep banging on about this being a NIssan. Has anyone ever asked why their Ranger looks so much like a Mazda BT50 underneath?? Ever wondered why the Colorado and D-Max are the same truck? Merc, Nissan and Renault have had an alliance for years and this is just another example of car manufacturers taking advantage of already invented technology to improve the economy, handlng, price and safety of their products for the ungrateful, moaning and ignorant buying public, most of whom are complete morons.

The X-Class falls under Mercedes Commercial so sits next to Sprinter and Viano vans in the showroom (in most countries). Mercedes has sold big and small commercial vans for decades, hasn't hurt their brand image. In Europe their entry-level passenger car is the A-Class, a very common car on the road and competes with the Golf and A3.

Actually the interior is pretty much all Mercedes except for some switchgear and gear lever etc. The dashboard is not from the Navara. This model has a M-B V6 not shared with any other brand, so it is the most ˜Mercedes' of the range.

Does it not leave a trail of smoke from new?

Mercedes has been selling cheap commercial vehicles for decades without affecting the sales of their prestige models. Like how Lamborghini sell tractors but I bet you would still have an Aventador.

Niscedes?? Merssan?

How is it apples and oranges? Mercedes never denied the X-Class is based on the Navara. They mentioned it at the launch and in interviews. You don't exactly see Mazda advertising that the BT-50 is ˜Ranger-based'.. they're literally the same scenario: Two manufacturers collaborating on a commercial vehicle. Mercedes helped fund Navara development so Nissan could design the independent rear as per Mercedes design brief. If you think Mercedes just ˜slapped' their badge on the Navara then you don't know much about the X-Class. Sidenote: Alfa's famous V6 is spelt ˜Busso'.

@Mito displacement can be replaced by technology. My new 2.4L diesel Mitsi with an 8 speed auto leaves my 3.2L Ranger for dead. Based on feedback from owners over the past few years, the 2.4L mitsi motor is more reliable than the 3.2L Ranger as well.

drive a v6 amarok first

You say that like its a bad thing.

The Fortuner is so hideously ugly it couldn't be considered at all.

It suits our needs and is the most economical by far and the engine stays in one piece, i have heard some first hand very sad stories regarding R.....gers

This has the credentials to be a dam good ute. We tried them all out when we wanted a new ute after owning Mazdas and Ford for 30 years and the Nissan was superior in all aspects so we brought a Nissan which now has 60,000 on the clock without a single complaint, It is an awesome vehicle . I often wonder weather all the Ford followers have ever tried anything else.

Very 1 about all of the above. But with the Ranger/BT50 and Colorado/D-Max, they are both very trucks when it comes to what they are.The Ranger and BT50 are both very different. Same drive train etc, but the interior (and exterior obviously) are VERY different. The Ranger got an update, which makes it light years ahead of the BT50. The interior of the BT50 is basically the same as release. The Rangers interior has had a massive update over the release interior. Not to mention the 3.2 diesel has been tuned by Ford for a little more torque and power. And now the the 2L Twin Turbo engine making its way into the Wildtrack, another engine is in the line-up.The Colorado and D-Max only share the chassis and suspension now. Thats due to GM selling off almost all of their shares in Isuzu. So now Isuzu can do their own thing. And yes it is very basic and dated compared to the Colorado, but its very much more utilitarian. The next Mazda and Isuzu ute will be a joint venture between them. I expect an Isuzu drive train and chassis, with a Mazda interior and exterior (and Isuzu customising this for themselves). Should be a good ute with Mazdas recent work in the car segment being amazing; and Isuzu knowing how to make an excellent diesel engine. Due 2020 IIRC.

The latest model is greatly improved.

Lets hope they fixed the rusting chassis issues causing a bending chassis epidemic!

The couriers fell for VW/Merc vans when they came out - Now they use Hyundai. Never met a happy VW/Merc van owner. Just Me too marketing of an overpriced and under performing product. Mercedes trucks are the worst - Noisy, unreliable and uncomfortable, so nobody buys them.Products aimed at people who are impressed at the name and will pay extra for a badge. Come back in 5 years and see if any can match the Top Gear Hilux.

The Ford Ranger is the biggest selling vehicle in NZ.The new vehicle market wants utes and SUVs. Why shouldnt Mercedes create a vehicle that people want to buy?

Only a pretty small percentage of ute owners actually want to load them up and thrash them around paddocks though.
