Manufacturer accused of spilling thousands of plastic 'nurdles' into Wellington Harbour

This is YEARS of environmental abuse - not even offering any apology for the environmental damage..!!??Simply suggesting they will try harder - this is an outrage..I challenge anybody to walk long Eveans Bay beach to see the millions of these Nurdles present.. its a mess. These guys need to fix this and support those cleaning it...!

You can ban plastic bags but in NZ they are not the primary waste going into the sea & ocean life. Plastic manufacturers & waste dumping esp in Asia have always been the worst. Residential waste going to landfill or recycling is literally negligible in comparison. A manufacturer can exceed all residential dumping over a year on a single bad work day. Seems to be if more money went into reducing waste from manufacturers than proselytising to the end user more of the environment would benefit. Reduce waste at the source from manufacturers & Asia and money would do far more good than less effective measures on comparatively negligible issues. After all much of our recycling ends up in landfill anyway. All those good intentions with compostable bags & paper are for naught when factories & fishing industries still dump en masse.

Money talks .. Fine them lots and lots of dollars then they will clean up their act

Well done to those who help clean up our beaches.

There are ways to stop these nurdles from getting into the water its just a case of them not taking enough care. Too lazy and dont give a toss. Fine them now.

Close them down - or get company loading trucks indoors, so any plastic spills are 100% contained and dealt with by the company. Repeated spillage is not acceptable. How about the company also pays for beach cleanups - including other plastic waste - since others have had to clean up after them?

go to the beach and help clean up

OMG. Why do we continue to pollute our own country? We will only be happy when we become like India. I hope they are given a decent fine and are made to clean up their act.

Why is this company not paying their staff to do the massive clean up??? Shouldnt need to rely on volunteers, onus should be made to fall on them for clean up.

Pellets or pallets, surely the reporter knows the difference or do they not proof read things these days and rely on spell checkers.Either way, these things are terrible for the environment. Why do the companies that continue to use them not have containment procedures in place to ensure they cant enter the environment. A simple bund right around the site would solve the issues in most cases. If they cant contain them they should be fined. Bet a $200,000 fine for each spill would get some action.

There should be very strict regulations and penalties for this type of plastic going into the environment. But the company need to realise the gravity of what they are doing. At this rate there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean by 2050. Keeping plastic out of the water ecosystems needs to be a high priority for governments and private sector equally. The water ways in Lower Hutt have been cleaned up over last few years, but plastic pollution really needs to be addressed. I hope the publicity about this problem will motivate the company and the council to take action. Stuff... Please follow this story, and give the company positive publicity if they can clean up their act.

Surly you could unload a truck inside where any spilled plastic could be contained and vacuumed up

Often see these spilled along Hutt Road near Kaiwharawhara also. Public need to report ASAP to council. Not good enough

Far too much sense in this comment

Its not, apparently, a one off but a continued breach of environmental laws.

Fines please. Money talks. Stop using plastic wherever you can. Put the blighters out of business. Use bar soap for body and hair. Bar soap at the sink in the bathroom and kitchen. Avoid fizzy drinks and use glass bottled cordial if you must. Loose tea instead of teabags. Look at that shopping trolley and recycle bin and see what you can avoid. Put them OUT of business. You are BUYING plastic bottles. Stop. ;)

I think theyre saying plastic should be reduced across everything, not just trusting to recycling at the household level.Every change will help.

This message was brought to you by the plastic Manufacturers Association really. It does not give the company's right to dump their rubbish into the harbour They should be heavily find and told to clean up the mess

THE PLASTIC PELLETS WERE DELIVERED ON WOODEN PALLETS.

Any spillage is minimal?!! Clearly not. Get your staff down there and pick up every last one!
