If you had read the story before commenting then you would have seen the very obvious relevance of my comment.Port Company CEO states I get a little frustrated by the tourism people who seem to think tourism is the only game in town, but freight is the bread and butter of this town.If were not moving our meat, our dairy, wool and fish, we dont have a city, so we had to do that work first.
Peter Davie said changing the design to minimise impact on protected Hectors dolphins in the harbour and to ensure safe handling of giant cruise ships had added to the cost and The sheer size of vessels carrying 6000 passengers forced realignment of the berthYeah, definitely the dolphins fault.
Like it or not Akaroa is a suburb of Christchurch. Does it really make sense to move the ships from one suburb to another at a cost of 60 million plus. The economic benefits are already being received in Canterbury and Christchurch. The city has more pressing issues and funding shortfalls surely.Akaroa number one ranked port in Australasia. This brings visitors and friends back to the region and plays out as word of mouth advertising that simply cannot be bought. That marketing gold title will leave Canterbury/Christchurch.
FGS, if dolphins are in the area its because they have been attracted by the activity. If they didnt like it they would not be there, they are not dumb creatures.
Hmmmmm $56 million to attract visitors that spend about 1/2 as much as Freedom Campers But a $10k dunny and a plot of spare land in the red zone would be too much for the freediom campers
This is for cruise ships.
