Speak for yourself Mr Mayor, personally I'm more than happy to see criminals in prison. It takes a lot of effort (crime) to get into prison so none of them are there by accident.
Going to prison is there for a reason. I myself have members in my family who are in prison. Stop stuffing around these people are there for a reason make dormitory rooms 10 to a room for all I care there should be no privileges, my family says it's the easiest place to get drugs they throw them over the fence in tennis balls!!! Soppposed to be smoke free but cigs are the ˜money' come on you lot we need to get tougher
Build a 5000 bed prison and drop the bar to two strikes. Maybe I need to run for parliament !!! This lot are too soft !!
Just remember its a prison, not a Resort it doesnt have to be comfortable
Kelvin Davis was like a possum in the head lights when questioned by the media in an absolute display of incompetence. If the government were truly determined to reduce victims of violence and focus on a zero victim policy year on year like the road toll then it would have to take unpalatable measures by increasing the prison muster in the short term by incarcerating violent offenders on their first offence and second offence minimum of 10 years and murder 40 years minimum. Only then would there be meaningful deterrent factors that would persuade these offenders to take another pathway. Deterrents do work just ask any gang member they use deterrents that are highly effective. Criminals just like the innocent public look both ways when they cross the road to avoid being run over. And for the odd individual where the deterrent doesnt work, well these people should not be in society anyway and kept incarcerated. We must start looking at doing whatever it takes to reduce violent crimes, half measures just create more victims. Education is all well and good but that is a long term goal. Its time we thought of the people who will be victims tomorrow, next week, next month and so on.
Youve got my vote cuz.
Prison and to the streets and increased our suicide rate also. One of the most criminal things ever done closing the institutions by then Minister of Health Helen Clark. Sadly carried on and never reversed even with he evidence community support was not working. Never about mental health but budget cutting
All these love a crim people commenting shows you how out of touch they are with our justice system. For every crim inside there are innocents through no fault of their own, have had their lives turned upside down or destroyed by the actions of the nice people inside our prisons. Most of these crims have affected not one innocent but some times hundreds.Mental health problems are just another cop out.
So Kelvin thinks the excersize yards are for caged animals. Well let's put in cafes, trampolines, cycle tracks with the latest cycles, and throw in some basketball hoops etc etc. May as well make it appealing for the crims eh?
Singapore must think that NZ is a joke. No crime to speak of there, but did any of our politicians go to find out what they are doing so well. Nooooooooo!!
Has anyone stopped to think that the reason crime is dropping and prison numbers are increasing is actually directly linked!!!If the bad guys and gals are being locked away we have less victims of crime.Labour seem so worried about prison numbers, they've forgotten the victims.
This is not a naive decision but a dumb decision. Waikeria is only growing by 100 beds for mental health, which is a good move, the rest are just a rebuild due to closing the top jail. This government do not get that the behavioural change and lowering of prison rates is a generational issue. Parenting is the main issue. Our youth need to be raised with ethic and boundaries and great parental role models. If this government thinks money thrown at Monday will cure Tuesday they are not just silly but thick. They project climate change out to 2050, smoking 2025 but think they will fix the prison muster by tomorrow and using law changes. As for the Mayor speak of what you know not just what is diplomatic. This should never be about regional jobs but about the here and now public safety. Destroy gangs as part of the generational solution.
Davis stated building prisons every 3 to 5 years. Doesn't even know his portfolio any jails build now are to up grade 40 to 100 year old prisons with upgrades to accommodate the now at some jails. The only 1 new prison started from scratch recently was Wiri.
Were being fed a mis-truth that our overcrowded prisons arent working in order for the government to lower the muster and save money. The government know that they themselves are at almost zero risk of harm from criminals that should be incarcerated but are free. You and I are the ones whose life is far more likely to be ruined by at large criminals.Prisons cant be emptied simply to cut costs. They are there for a reason. The only way to judge a prisons effectiveness is by the number of escapees. When they start letting out criminals to cut costs. Someone who has their life ruined by a criminal that is at large due to relaxed sentencing should be able to sue the individual government ministers who changed the law.
If they have done wrong, created victims...I want to see them locked up. That's called justice.Labour's message to NZ criminals is this... ...'We're not coming for you and don't want to offend your rights, carry on as usual hurting, stealing, damaging and destroying.'
Read the opinion he wrote he didn't say that he said when they . Nice try to twist what was said but let's wait as Little has said he wants to change bail laws etc. keep an open mind.
If a 600 bed prison is 3/4 the price of a 1500 bed prison - it makes much more sense to build the 1500 bed prison.
Who is letting prisoners out?I think you misunderstood? Or purposely misunderstood?
I think you should. Nz needs a far right party. Maybe then the Nats could have a potential coalition partner.
Given the figures of mental illness among prisoners it would be better to build more mental health secure facility. When we closed all of our mental hospitals we transferred many to prison which is a most unsuitable environment. Time for a rethink?
