Charge 25 dollars at the border for international visitors. That will equate to 100 million a year bit more than DOCS proposed 3 million. Problem solved
If they cant afford a general tourist tax of $25 we dont want them to come...
Dont know what all the fuss is about! we get several million tourists hear every year (which is becoming to much) and only a few thousand will go on these three great walks as accesses limited! we are getting to many of these cheapskate tourist coming here now who are try to do and see everything for nothing! When I was in Canada a couple of years ago I had to pay C$60 to drive from Banff to Jasper because the road passed through a national park and all the hotels I stayed at I was charged a tourist levy. In the UK you have to pay up to ten pounds just to park your car in national parks for a day.Its time we stopped using ratepayers and taxpayers money to subsidise tourism it should be making enough money to support its own infrastructure.
Regardless of whether we charge tourists more we need to cap numbers. There are just far too many for the infrastructure.We dont need more infrastructure either. We dont want to follow the Yellowstone or the Boulder Colorado example.Queenstown is already a prime example of what happens to a destination that is allowed to be swamped by tourism. There are parallels with dairy, forestry and immigration.
It seems we're struggling with tourist numbers at peak times as it is. Charge more, attract a better class of tourist, One's that don't defecate on our front lawns..
Totally over the amount of tourists coming here and totally over the cheap back back variety even more. Increasing tourist numbers has been a poisoned chalice where the benefits go to a few (and in some cases expecially Queenstown the benefits go straight off shore as the hotel or car company is owned by overseas interests). Ever been to some of our major tourist destinations - its a case of spot the Kiwi and we as a country lose out. Its now become too costly to stay in some areas and premier walking tracks are booked out sometimes a year in advance. This is very sad and I never thought I would see this happen over here. I used to be welcoming to people from overseas but that smile is fading......
Along with compulsory insurance.
Hope so as logical steps aren't being taken to stop the rot. Kiwis would like their clean/green back.....it's disappearing under the weight of tourism greed.
Who should pay? Easy peasy, the beneficiaries of tourist travel should pay for tourist facilities, that includes , Hotels, Motels, Campsites, Camper Van and Hire Car companies etc etc.
We seem to have become a country with no imagination, no sense of our own worth or principles of gaurdianship of this land and its people.We have allowed intensive, mono cultural and destructive industry like Radiata forestry, dairy and mass tourism to take hold and prolferate unregulated and unchecked.Killing the goose that layed the golden egg is often a phrase cited to encourage more and more of these envronmentally damaging practices however it is our countries heart and soul that is being killed by unthinking greed and self interest by both the public and private sector.
Went to Queenstown in March for a few days. Never again. The place was saturated with tourists - couldnt move, queues for everything, driving and trying to find a park was a nightmare, tour buses everywhere. Its a shame really.
Quality tourists who are respectful of the fact that they chose to come here. No one forced them to.User pays.
Time for our visitors to pay , or time for us NZers to do a better job of managing our own country, I fear that this tax on tourists is just a cover for less than adequate management of our own resources.
It doesnt matter how much we charge tourists for huts/ parks what ever.There is just to many of them in some places and things are looking worn,over used. eg all those vehicles who have driven all over the foreshore of Lake Pukuki it now looks awful.Many other examples to.
Instead of being concerned about how a overseas tourist may think/feel about paying more or a tax for visiting our beautiful environment we should be more concerned about the lack of resources iemoney being allocated to preserve and protect our environment and all that lives in/on it. It's not should we charge overseas tourists that's a no brainer in my view. It's more about ensuring money/ resources are used to help and protect on wildlife not making bigger better flasher accomodation and facilities. Our wildness needs protecting if an overseas tourist complains about the cost they obviously need educated on the cost of our human impact to the creatures who don't have a voice. We can however have a positive impact by putting the protection and preservation of our wilderness environment at the forefront of our visits.
Bet they dont pay as much as I do for the roads *they* drive on.
In India there are signs which show local prices and tourist prices. Why cant New zealand do the same?
I use the mountain bike facilities most weekends but not the library but am happy that my rates support it because thats how a community works.
Crank up the charges and limit numbers to what the facilities can sustain. Anyone coming into the country has a Passport and this should be used to collect any fines (e.g. traffic) etc at the border.
If you cant afford too pay, dont stay. This country is a couple of Islands not a continent. It is expensive to travel in Europe, wedid we what could and will go back in later years with some money to spend. Thailand now copes with the masses, we cant cope yet as a nation for zillions arriving expecting a cheap old time on the grandest tour left on the map...outside of Antartica and a few others...
